POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for welding structural steel components and fabricated assemblies in accordance with shop drawings, weld symbols, applicable Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), and job requirements. This position focuses on productive structural welding while maintaining dimensional integrity, weld quality, and safe shop practices. Relocation assistance available if moving from out of the area up to $4500

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Weld structural steel assemblies including beams, columns, frames, plates, stiffeners, clips, connections, and other fabricated components.
  • Perform fillet, groove, and other required welds using the welding processes and positions applicable to assigned work.
  • Read and interpret shop drawings, weld symbols, dimensions, and connection details before welding.
  • Verify that fitted assemblies, joint preparation, weld size, and component placement appear correct before beginning work.
  • Follow applicable WPS requirements including process, consumable, technique, and other specified variables.
  • Use proper welding sequence and heat control to reduce distortion, pulling, and movement of structural assemblies.
  • Clean weld areas and remove slag, spatter, or other material as required between passes and after welding.
  • Recognize visible weld discontinuities, poor fit-up, drawing discrepancies, or other problems and address or report them promptly.
  • Perform minor preparation, grinding, gouging, or weld repair when authorized and required.
  • Maintain welding equipment, leads, guns, tools, and work areas in serviceable condition.
  • Meet reasonable production expectations without sacrificing weld quality or safety.
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
  • Previous structural steel welding experience preferred.
  • Ability to pass the applicable M J & H Fabrication structural weld test(s).
  • Ability to read structural shop drawings and understand common weld symbols.
  • Working knowledge of structural welding practices, joint preparation, weld sizes, and common fabrication terminology.
  • Experience with the welding processes used in structural fabrication is preferred.
  • Ability to use tape measures, squares, gauges, and common shop measuring tools.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Consistent welding technique and ability to maintain required weld size and profile.
  • Ability to identify obvious fit-up, alignment, or drawing problems before welding.
  • Good mechanical aptitude, measurement skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work from drawings and written instructions with limited supervision once assigned.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with fitters, material handlers, supervision, and Quality personnel.
SAFETY & QUALITY EXPECTATIONS
  • Regularly stand, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb, and work around large structural assemblies.
  • Lift and handle welding equipment, tools, leads, and fabrication materials within safe working limits.
  • Work around welding arc, sparks, grinding, heat, noise, fumes, overhead lifting, and moving shop equipment.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE and safely work in a structural fabrication environment.
PHYSICAL & WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Follow company safety requirements, PPE rules, hot-work procedures, and safe material-handling practices.
  • Perform work in accordance with drawings, weld symbols, WPS requirements, and job specifications.
  • Do not weld assemblies that are visibly incorrect or questionable without obtaining clarification.
  • Protect completed work from unnecessary damage and report defects, drawing conflicts, or material concerns.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area to reduce hazards and improve fabrication efficiency.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
  • Pay is dependent on experience, skills, and qualifications. Insurance benefits are available after successful completion of the probationary period.
