Role Summary

Seattle Children’s Hospital is seeking an experienced, visionary, and clinically adept Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Supervisor to lead our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) APP team.

In this dual-faceted role, you will balance operational leadership, people management, and program development with frontline clinical practice. As a frontline provider, you will deliver comprehensive, direct inpatient care to critically ill infants, children, adolescents, and young adults in our 40-bed state-of-the-art unit. As a supervisor, you will partner closely with Medical Directors, APP Leadership, Nursing Leadership, and Division Administration to ensure clinical excellence, optimize 24/7 staffing models, mentor APP staff, and drive continuous quality improvement across the critical care service.

Key Responsibilities

1. Supervisory & Operational Leadership (Administrative Scope, 20% of role)

  • Team Leadership & People Management: Provide direct supervision, mentorship, and career development for the PICU APP cohort. Conduct annual performance evaluations, oversee professional credentialing/competencies, and lead recruitment, hiring, and retention initiatives.
  • Workforce Planning & Scheduling: Direct operational scheduling for a 24/7/365 continuous care model (12-hour days / 14-hour nights, weekends, and holidays). Manage schedule equity, cross-coverage strategies, PTO requests, and clinical surge plans.
  • Onboarding & Clinical Education: Design, standardize, and maintain a rigorous onboarding and preceptorship curriculum for new PICU APPs. Facilitate ongoing continuing education, simulation drills, and advanced organ-support competency assessments.
  • Quality Improvement & Patient Safety: Partner with Division Leadership on Clinical Quality Improvement (CQI) programs, Root Cause Analyses (RCAs), clinical pathway development, and patient safety reporting.
  • Interprofessional Collaboration: Serve as the clinical and administrative liaison between the APP team, attending intensivists, physician fellows/residents, nursing leadership, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, and surgical subspecialists.

2. Frontline Inpatient PICU Practice (Clinical Scope, 80% of role)

  • Direct Clinical Management: Manage a high-acuity inpatient panel of critically ill pediatric medical and surgical patients within an integrated multidisciplinary team model.
  • Emergency Response & Resuscitation: Serve as a frontline critical care responder for bedside clinical decompensation, acute resuscitations, and rapid airway/cardiorespiratory interventions.
  • Advanced Life Support & Organ Technologies:
    • Direct and titrate Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO/ECLS) in partnership with perfusion and critical care faculty.
    • Prescribe, initiate, and manage Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) and continuous hemodialysis.
    • Execute invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation strategies, including High-Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV).
  • High-Complexity Diagnoses: Deliver specialized care for acute multi-organ failure, solid organ transplants (liver, kidney, intestine), bone marrow transplants, oncology CAR-T cell therapy complications, severe sepsis, neuro-trauma, status epilepticus, and severe DKA.
  • Surgical Critical Care: Lead inpatient postoperative recovery for complex craniofacial, neurosurgical, pediatric general, otolaryngology, and orthopedic surgical cases.
  • Rounds, Procedures, and Transitions: Lead and contribute to daily multidisciplinary rounds, perform necessary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, interpret point-of-care diagnostics, and facilitate safe transitions of care to step-down or acute care units.

Work Schedule & Practice Environment

  • Position Split: Blended leadership/administrative protected time and frontline clinical practice.
  • Shift Model: 12-hour days and 14-hour nights; requires flexibility to work variable shifts to supervise, evaluate, and support 24/7 staff across all tours of duty.
