Are you organised, proactive and great at making things happen?

We’re looking for two Business Support Officers to join SYMCA’s Business Operations team, providing high-quality support to senior leaders working on some of South Yorkshire’s key priorities.

Business Support Officer – Health
You’ll provide dedicated support to our new Deputy Mayor for Health and Director of Health, joining at an exciting time as this important portfolio develops.

You’ll help senior leaders stay ahead of busy and competing priorities by managing diaries and inboxes, coordinating meetings, briefings and correspondence, liaising with stakeholders and making sure actions are followed through.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working at pace, building relationships and helping to establish effective ways of working from the outset.

Business Support Officer – Directorate Support & AI Trailblazing
You’ll support Directors who are committed to being AI trailblazers within SYMCA, exploring how AI, digital tools and new approaches can help us work smarter and more effectively.

Alongside providing excellent day-to-day business support, you’ll be encouraged to bring curiosity, ideas and a willingness to try new things. You’ll help identify opportunities to improve processes, reduce repetitive activity and test new ways of working that could benefit the wider organisation.

You don’t need to be an AI expert. We’re looking for someone who is curious about technology, willing to learn and excited about doing things differently.

Applications must be accompanied by a cover letter to detail how you meet the criteria as detailed within the role profile (please see role profile attached), and indicating which portfolio you would be interested in working with (if you have a preference). Please note, all applications should be made directly via our careers portal.

What to expect from the recruitment process
We want our selection process to give you the opportunity to show us what you can bring to the role beyond a traditional interview.

There will be a two-stage selection process, including an assessment centre, designed to explore the skills, judgement and approach needed to succeed as a Business Support Officer.

We anticipate that the first stage will take place on Monday, 16 November 2026. Candidates who successfully progress will then be invited to a second-stage interview on Wednesday, 18 November 2026.

Further details about the assessment and interview arrangements will be provided to shortlisted candidates.

About the role

Depending on the role, you’ll:
  • provide proactive and confidential support to senior leaders
  • manage complex diaries, inboxes and competing priorities
  • coordinate meetings, briefings, correspondence and follow-up actions
  • build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • anticipate requirements and resolve issues before they become problems
  • handle sensitive information with discretion and sound judgement
  • support projects, events and wider organisational activity
  • look for opportunities to improve processes and ways of working
  • work collaboratively with colleagues to provide a flexible and resilient Business Support service.

About you

We’re looking for someone who is:
  • highly organised with excellent attention to detail
  • proactive and comfortable using their initiative
  • confident managing multiple and changing priorities
  • an excellent written and verbal communicator
  • comfortable working with senior colleagues and stakeholders
  • able to exercise sound judgement and discretion
  • confident using Microsoft 365 and digital tools
  • adaptable, collaborative and committed to providing a great service.
For our AI trailblazing role, we’d particularly welcome someone who is curious about AI and emerging technology, enjoys learning and experimenting with new approaches and is prepared to challenge “the way we’ve always done it”.
