About Us

Most accomplished professionals can tell you what they have done. Far fewer can tell you what they are hard-wired to do, or why some mandates feel natural while others slowly wear them down.

Rutherford International brings together referral networks, psychometric data analytics, behavioural science and game theory. We use them to build a collaborative global community of high-potential and proven professionals across the industry sectors and leadership functions we serve. Individual and corporate members have access to private equity deal-makers, executive search, the Rutherford Talent Clearinghouse™ for fractional and independent consulting engagements, and a knowledge network of industry mentors.

Every path begins with the RutherfordINTEL™ Assessment. Built on Personality Analytics 4.0™, it reveals your personality type and leadership style. It also shows how that hard-wiring shapes the way you think, decide, lead and perform. The science has been applied to more than 40,000 professionals spanning 1,500+ roles, with 85% predictive accuracy for performance potential.

See what that intelligence looks like in practice. This certified Rutherford Talent Guild™ member profile is an example of how we present our members to employers: confidentially, by membership number, and backed by science.

Job Description

This is a remote position.

Chief Financial Officer — Enterprise Finance Leadership

This Evergreen Career Profile invites finance leaders to register for consideration for the Rutherford Talent Guild™, Rutherford’s curated community for executives pursuing permanent leadership appointments. It is an expression of professional interest in future opportunities, not an advertisement for a current employment vacancy. Registration is not an application for a specific vacancy, and it does not confer membership or promise a placement.

When financial complexity outgrows existing finance capability, an enterprise CFO helps build the visibility, discipline and leadership needed for informed decisions. The contribution depends on the mandate, the team and the authority actually delegated.
This profile is for finance leaders who hold, or are preparing for, the senior finance role in an enterprise on a permanent basis. We welcome serving and former chief financial officers, and finance directors, vice-presidents of finance and group or divisional finance leaders whose responsibility already reaches enterprise scope. Registration records where you are now; curator review explores where you want to go and the evidence that supports it.

The mandate

An enterprise CFO leads the finance function on a continuing basis: financial stewardship and reporting, planning and decision support, cash and financing readiness, controls and risk, and the people and systems that make those possible. It is an executive mandate, distinct from controllership, treasury, FP&A or advisory work, though leaders from each of those routes may grow into it.

Permanent appointment brings continuity, embedded accountability and the chance to build a finance team over time. It does not, by itself, confer unlimited authority. Every organisation decides what its CFO may approve, what needs the chief executive, board, owners or sponsor, and how disagreements are resolved.

Representative work

  • Management and statutory reporting the board, lenders and owners can rely on
  • Budgeting, forecasting and scenario analysis with documented assumptions
  • Liquidity, working-capital policy, banking relationships and financing readiness
  • Financial controls, risk escalation and support to the audit committee or board
  • Building, leading and developing the finance team, and strengthening finance systems and data
  • Commercial judgement on pricing, investment, acquisitions and cost
  • Where automated or AI-assisted tools are used, governance of how outputs are reviewed and what is fit for the board

Accountability within the mandate

  • Accountable deliverables: plans, forecasts, reporting, controls, board and lender papers, and timely escalation of risk, subject to the authority, resources and information the organisation provides.
  • Outcomes achieved jointly with operating leaders and the finance team: forecast accuracy, timely and accurate closes, cash conversion, margin and covenant compliance. These are shared, not guaranteed.
  • Outcomes you influence that depend on boards, owners, sponsors, lenders, buyers and markets: financings, acquisitions, successions and enterprise value.

Contexts we profile

No candidate needs experience of every context. These help us understand the situations you lead best.
  • Private-equity-backed businesses. Turning the investment plan into credible finance workstreams: reporting, liquidity and covenant visibility, cash conversion, acquisitions and integration, and the finance capacity to deliver them, alongside a sponsor, board and chief executive who own other parts of the plan.
  • Family and founder-led businesses in succession. Making the economics of the business visible enough for the next leader and the owners to decide well. Management succession, ownership transfer and a sale are different events, and a CFO’s contribution differs in each.
  • Growth and scaling. Building the planning, infrastructure, controls and funding a larger organisation needs.
  • Established and regulated enterprises. Reporting, controls, treasury and the statutory or sector requirements that apply.
Financial stabilisation and restructuring are profiled separately: F24 Turnaround CFO and F25 Chief Turnaround Officer / Chief Restructuring Officer. Enterprise CFO experience is not treated as evidence of turnaround experience, or the reverse.

Enterprise leadership, finance first
Many strong CFOs bring enterprise perspective, strategic breadth and leadership that their chief executive relies on well beyond the finance function. We value that. This profile still asks first about finance leadership: the analytical rigour, financial discipline, stewardship and controls judgement behind every recommendation you make. Leaders whose ambitions lie in the chief executive role may register for that function separately; one does not replace the other.

What we are asking

The question is not simply whether you could hold a CFO title. It is whether you have the demonstrated capability, or the assessed potential, to perform at a high level in an appropriate enterprise finance mandate, and what professional development may be needed to achieve that.

For accepted members, a curator leads the development of a Career Thesis: the problem you are best placed to solve, the environments in which you have shown it, your contribution and authority, the evidence behind it, and one development priority. It is not required at registration, and any summary is shared with an organisation only with your consent.

The Rutherford Talent Guild™

The Rutherford Talent Guild™ is for executives pursuing permanent leadership appointments within an organisation. Rutherford manages a longer-term career relationship: interpreting your assessment alongside your experience, clarifying the mandates in which you can contribute most, identifying development priorities and, where there is a credible fit and under applicable arrangements, introducing you selectively to organisations for specific roles, including through private talent pipelines and Rutherford & Company retained searches. An introduction is an event in the relationship, not the relationship itself.

Guild or Clearinghouse?

Rutherford Talent Solutions™ has two membership communities. The difference lies in how work is engaged.
  • Rutherford Talent Guild™: employed appointments. For executives pursuing permanent leadership roles. This profile leads to Guild consideration.
  • Rutherford Talent Clearinghouse™: independent engagements. For fractional executives and management consultants who contract their expertise, often with several clients.
If you also provide ongoing, part-time CFO leadership, you may register interest in fractional work as well. Each community has its own review, and acceptance into one does not imply acceptance into the other.

How the process works

Registration → initial review → assessment invitation → assessment → curator review → membership decision. Completing the assessment, including any payment associated with it, does not in itself confer membership. Membership carries no promise of introductions, interviews, appointments or placement.

The RutherfordINTEL Assessment informs our evaluation of functional potential, leadership style and readiness for an enterprise finance mandate.

About the RutherfordINTEL Assessment. RutherfordINTEL reports that its assessment predicts performance potential with 85% predictive accuracy. That is a statement about the instrument, not a guarantee or a probability of success for any individual, role or mandate. Your results are always interpreted by a Rutherford curator alongside your experience, achievements and objectives.

Requirements

What we look for

Evidence before titles. During curation we will explore:
  • The enterprise finance responsibility you have actually carried: the organisation, its ownership and scale, the finance team, your reporting line and the decisions you were authorised to take.
  • What you could decide, what needed approval, and a time your recommendation was overridden and what followed.
  • Reporting, planning and forecasting that informed real decisions, and how you checked their reliability.
  • Controls and governance you designed or strengthened, and your work with an audit committee or board.
  • Financing, banking and lender relationships you led or supported.
  • The finance capability you built: team depth, systems, planning cadence and succession within finance.
  • What you were accountable for, what you achieved jointly with others and what you influenced.
  • Where relevant, your contribution in a private-equity-backed business or a family succession, and how you worked with sponsors, founders or family shareholders.

Mandate fit

Be ready to describe the contexts you have led in and those you are preparing for (private-equity-backed, family or founder succession, growth and scaling, established or regulated), and the appointment formats you are open to.

How we consider your background

  • Your title. A chief financial officer title is welcome but not essential. We consider the responsibility you actually carried, and a CFO title without enterprise scope carries less weight than a finance director role with it.
  • Length of experience. No fixed minimum years-of-experience threshold applies to this Evergreen profile.
  • Situational experience. Private-equity, succession, acquisition or regulated-sector experience strengthens your fit where an organisation’s situation calls for it. None is required for registration
  • Professional designations. These are recorded and considered alongside demonstrated capability. Some mandates, sectors or regulators may require one.
  • Personality. No particular personality type is expected. Different finance leaders succeed with different chief executives, boards and teams.

To register

Registration is short: your essential details, your function (F05 Chief Financial Officer), your sector and your current résumé. A LinkedIn profile is optional, and you do not need a Career Thesis. Deeper questions about authority, examples, availability and references are gathered during curation, after initial review.
