Emissions Compliance Analyst, Operations Team
Piraeus · Hybrid · Full-time
About NEMO
New Era Maritime Operations is a forward-looking organisation focused on modernising and optimising maritime operations through technology and data-driven solutions. We are building a state-of-the-art platform for vessel monitoring, alerting, environmental compliance, and performance, with particular care for the data behind it. NEMO aims to support clients and partners in navigating complex maritime rules while improving operational performance and reducing environmental impact.
The Role
The Emissions Compliance Analyst joins NEMO as the regulatory expert ensuring the platform meets our clients adherence to international and regional maritime environmental regulations: EU MRV, IMO DCS, CII, EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime. The role is hybrid, based in Piraeus, with the flexibility to perform part of the work from home. You will turn these regulations into clear calculation rules, check that what the platform produces stands up to an accredited verifier, and keep it right as the rules change.
- Define the calculation for each regulation: emission factors, voyage and port-call scope, fuel monitoring methods, CII attained/required values and rating, ETS allowances and cost, and FuelEU GHG intensity, compliance balance, banking, pooling and penalties.
- Build and maintain the regulatory reference data, versioned and sourced: emission factors (tank-to-wake and well-to-wake), CII reference lines and reduction factors, ETS phase-in, FuelEU targets.
- Check the platform's figures against verified MRV, DCS and ETS reports from client vessels, explain every difference, and write the test cases our developers build against.
- Specify the data we need from clients (bunker delivery notes, ROB, port calls, cargo) and where today's vessel data falls short.
- Track regulatory change, including MEPC decisions, EU implementing and delegated acts and the IMO Net-Zero Framework. Explain what each change means for the product before it takes effect, and communicate clearly with internal stakeholders, clients and, where needed, external regulatory bodies.
- Support clients: review their figures with them, answer regulatory questions, help in discussions with verifiers and auditors, and assist in implementing emissions reduction strategies based on the platform's performance data.
- Maintain the documentation behind every calculation (method, sources, assumptions), support system improvements, and contribute to best practices in environmental compliance.
Minimum Qualifications
- 3+ years' hands-on work with EU MRV and EU ETS, and working knowledge of IMO DCS/CII and FuelEU Maritime, gained at a ship manager or owner, a verifier or class society, or a compliance software provider.
- Experience with preparing or verifying annual emissions reports yourself, knowing where the numbers usually go wrong.
- Experience with emissions audits: you have taken part in internal or external compliance audits or verifications, and you understand the cost side of emissions reporting (EUA surrender, FuelEU penalties and pooling).
- Experience with SEEMP Part III and CII corrective action plans.
- Working familiarity with THETIS-MRV and the EU ETS Union Registry.
- Strong analytical skills: data analysis, attention to detail, advanced Excel or other data management tools, and the habit of checking a figure before trusting it.
- Clear written reporting and stakeholder communication, and the ability to explain a complex regulation to a developer, a technical manager and a client alike.
- Fluent Greek and English, written and spoken.
- A degree in maritime studies, marine engineering or naval architecture, environmental science, finance, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with emissions compliance software or fuel and emissions monitoring systems.
- Experience with SQL or Python, or working alongside a software team.
- Experience with marine fuel grades and alternative fuels.
Learning Opportunity
You will work side by side with our lead naval architect and learn the physics behind the emissions figures: how hull condition, speed, draft and weather drive fuel consumption and regulation figures. You will also learn a complete, production-grade vessel performance methodology and fleet-level analytics. That gives you a level of understanding few compliance specialists have, and it is what makes emissions reduction advice credible. You will own a product module from the start, so your rules become the platform's rules, and you will see how a real platform is built, tested and delivered to shipping clients.
