Brighter Futures Start Here

We are an inclusive team who power two of the most iconic and loved brands, Kmart and Target. We have more than 50,000 passionate individuals across our stores, distribution centres, and offices around the globe.

With our brands touching the lives of almost two million customers every week, you’ll feel the impact of the work you’ll do every day. As a leader in the retail market, we’re optimistic about our future and yours. We’re changing at a rapid rate, giving you challenging work that you’ll be proud of.

Join the team

We’re looking for a National Safety Risk and Governance Manager (known in our business as the National Risk and Governance Manager) to lead the continued transformation of safety governance, assurance and risk management across Kmart and Target, and to enable and empower our business to deliver stronger safety and risk outcomes.

This is a pivotal national role and member of the Safety Leadership Team. You’ll lead the frameworks, systems and insights that help our teams meet their Health & Safety obligations, reduce material risk and make safe, confident decisions every day. Governance in this role is a business enabler, not compliance for its own sake: it makes it easier for our stores, distribution centres and offices to do the right thing. You’ll lead transformational change across audit assurance, safe work practices, incident triage, reporting and continuous improvement, bringing consistency, rigour and practical leadership to safety outcomes across Australia and New Zealand.

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead and transform the enterprise-wide safety governance framework, including regulatory compliance, risk management, assurance and document control, so it is simple, scalable and easy for the business to use.
  • Enable stronger business outcomes through evolution of our data and digitalisation strategy.
  • Oversee safe work practices, policies and risk assessments, enabling consistent governance, review cycles, approvals and communication that give leaders and teams clarity and confidence.
  • Direct internal and external audit programs, coordinating data requests, auditor queries and assurance activities, and turn findings into improvements the business can act on.
  • Drive the quality and integrity of incident, hazard, near miss and injury data, including weekly, monthly and quarterly safety reporting and trend analysis, giving the business timely and trusted insights to act on.
  • Manage key safety systems, databases and service contracts, ensuring accurate reporting, effective performance and value for the business, and lead their evolution as part of our transformation agenda.
  • Partner with operational and cross-functional stakeholders to embed safety requirements, controls and practical solutions into business initiatives, building capability and ownership across the business.
  • Champion transformational change by introducing new ways of working, uplifting leader capability and embedding a culture where safety and risk management enable the business to perform.
  • Use data and assurance insights to identify emerging risks, strengthen controls and drive continuous improvement and measurable safety and risk outcomes across Australia and New Zealand.

To be successful in this role you’ll have:

  • Extensive experience in a similar safety governance, risk, compliance or assurance role within a complex, highly regulated environment, with a track record of enabling the business to improve safety and risk outcomes.
  • Strong knowledge of Australian and New Zealand WHS legislation, regulatory compliance and self-insurance requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and leading audit, assurance, risk management and document governance programs that are practical, scalable and valued by the business.
  • Proven experience leading and delivering transformational change, including shaping the vision, bringing stakeholders on the journey and embedding new ways of working that last.
  • Are a proven health and safety leader with a track record of influencing at senior levels and leading high-performing teams.
  • You are confident working in complex and multi-site environments, can bring others on the journey, and know how to turn strategy into practical, embedded change.
  • Strong working knowledge of safety governance frameworks such as ISO 45001 and ISO 31000, along with risk assessment and control methodologies.
  • Confidence using enterprise safety systems and data visualisation tools, with experience in platforms such as Ecoportal is highly regarded.
  • Strong analytical capability, with the ability to turn safety data and trends into clear insights, priorities and practical actions.
  • A strategic, influential and collaborative leadership style, with the ability to balance safety obligations and commercial requirements and build trusted partnerships that help the business manage risk with confidence.

Benefits we’ll offer you:

  • Flexible hybrid working options through our Flex Where, Flex When, Flex Well policy.
  • A team member discount card that gives you a discount at Kmart, Target, Officeworks and Bunnings
  • Access to the Brighter Benefits program which entitles you to exclusive discounts and benefits in the areas of entertainment, travel, lifestyle, and health – with over 60 suppliers!
