Operational Accounting Consultant | Singapore | 1-year Contract | 100% Remote Work
We are seeking an experienced Operational Accountant to support the finance function of a leading global technology organisation. This role is suited to a technically strong accounting professional with practical experience in US GAAP, month-end close, balance sheet reconciliations and payroll-related accounting.
The successful candidate will take ownership of assigned accounting activities, particularly payroll and employee-related balance sheet accounts, ensuring accurate financial reporting, timely reconciliations and appropriate resolution of accounting discrepancies.
This is a hands-on operational accounting position requiring sound accounting fundamentals, analytical thinking and the confidence to work independently with regional and global stakeholders in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Accounting & Month-End Close
- Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, prepayments, reversals, reclassifications and routine month-end adjustments.
- Perform monthly balance sheet and P&L reconciliations, ensuring balances are complete, accurate and adequately supported.
- Investigate aged, unusual or unexplained balances, identify root causes and drive timely resolution.
- Review account movements and perform analytical assessments against prior periods, budgets and forecasts.
- Support intercompany accounting, cross-charges and related reconciliations.
Payroll & Employee-Related Accounting
- Own the accounting and reconciliation of assigned payroll-related and employee benefit balance sheet accounts.
- Review payroll reports and supporting schedules, ensuring payroll expenses, accruals, statutory payments and employee benefit balances are appropriately recorded.
- Prepare and review payroll-related accruals, bonus provisions, employee benefit adjustments and true-ups in accordance with US GAAP and internal accounting policies.
- Investigate significant account movements and variances, explain underlying drivers and ensure appropriate accounting treatment and period recognition.
- Work closely with HR, payroll, tax and regional finance teams to resolve discrepancies and respond to accounting queries.
Financial Controls, Audit & Stakeholder Management
- Maintain appropriate supporting documentation and ensure accounting activities comply with internal controls and reporting requirements.
- Support internal and external audits by preparing reconciliations, schedules and supporting evidence, while anticipating potential audit queries.
- Respond independently to stakeholder enquiries, applying sound judgement to resolve issues or escalate matters when necessary.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen accounting processes, improve reconciliation quality and streamline operational workflows.
- Support ad hoc accounting reviews and finance projects as required.
Desired Experience & Requirements
- Degree in Accountancy, Finance or a related discipline.
- At least 5 years of relevant experience in operational accounting, financial accounting, controllership or Record-to-Report (R2R) functions.
- Strong practical knowledge of US GAAP, with the ability to apply accounting principles to payroll, employee-related expenses and balance sheet accounts.
- Demonstrated experience in month-end close, journal preparation, accruals, prepayments, reversals, intercompany accounting and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Direct exposure to payroll accounting, payroll accruals, employee benefits, bonus provisions, payroll tax or other employee-related accounting is highly relevant.
- Ability to independently investigate reconciliation discrepancies, aged balances and unusual account movements, and clearly articulate the reasons behind variances.
- Strong understanding of financial controls, audit requirements and supporting documentation.
- Experience working with ERP systems such as SAP or Oracle.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills; SQL and experience with data analysis tools would be advantageous.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Confident communicator with the ability to engage effectively with regional and global stakeholders.
Preferred Background
- Candidates with a combination of Big 4 audit training and subsequent in-house commercial accounting experience are particularly encouraged to apply.
- Experience supporting multinational organisations, regional finance teams or global shared services environments will be advantageous.
- CPA, CA, ACCA or equivalent professional qualifications are preferred.
