About The Company

Bauer Media Group is an international media business focused on creating content and services that enrich everyday life. Its portfolio spans print and digital publishing, audio broadcasting, entertainment, and other media-related sectors. Bauer reaches more than 61 million listeners each week through over 150 radio and podcast brands across nine countries, and publishes popular brands in markets including the UK, Germany, Poland, and France. As a fifth-generation family-owned business, Bauer takes a long-term, consumer-first approach. Its workforce of approximately 12,000 people shares a commitment to creating experiences that matter to audiences.

About The Role

Bauer Media is seeking a Principal QA Engineer to lead backend quality across the platform behind Rayo, its unified audio and radio experience across web, mobile, smart speakers, and backend services. This is a new, influential role within the Digital Quality Assurance team, part of Technology Advisory. You will help establish quality as a core engineering principle, shaping systems and delivery practices so that testability, resilience, and contract integrity are considered from the start.

Working closely with backend and frontend engineers, product managers, architects, and SRE/DevOps colleagues, you will guide technical decisions and build confidence in a platform serving millions of requests. The team is collaborative, remote-first, and committed to continuous improvement, shared ownership, mentoring, and thoughtful engineering. This is a full-time, permanent role based remotely in the UK, with occasional in-person collaboration—approximately eight times per year—in Manchester or London. Visa sponsorship is not available.

Qualifications

You bring substantial experience in a technical QA automation or backend engineering role, ideally within a shift-left environment. You have a strong understanding of RESTful architectures and experience validating API contracts, JSON Schemas, or GraphQL types. You are proficient in Go or another object-oriented programming language and can quickly develop expertise in Go. Your background includes testing complex APIs, cloud-hosted services, and AWS environments, as well as asynchronous and event-driven systems such as Kafka or SQS.

You have built, maintained, and troubleshot automated tests in CI/CD pipelines and understand Agile/Scrum practices, including planning, refinement, and retrospectives. You use AI development tools thoughtfully, with the technical judgement to review, debug, and improve generated code. Clear communication, sound stakeholder management, and a team-first approach are essential. Experience with k6, Infrastructure as Code such as Terraform or CloudFormation, Docker, Kubernetes, or helping teams adopt automation-first quality practices is an advantage.

Responsibilities

Lead backend quality strategy across APIs, services, and cloud infrastructure, embedding testability in architectural reviews and product planning. Partner with engineers and product managers during epic breakdown to identify risks and design for reliable validation. Establish contract-driven testing practices so services can evolve independently, and promote schema-first development using OpenAPI or Swagger specifications as an automated source of truth.

Design a layered automation approach focused on API and service-level testing, supported by targeted end-to-end checks using Playwright and TypeScript. Work with developers to strengthen behaviour-driven development in Agile workflows. Integrate regression suites and meaningful quality gates into CI/CD pipelines to support continuous feedback. Own load and performance testing strategy, helping ensure resilience under high traffic and supporting web and mobile teams where needed.

Collaborate with SRE/DevOps colleagues to incorporate logging, tracing, and metrics into quality practices, using tools such as OpenTelemetry or Datadog. Use AI assistants to accelerate test and code generation while maintaining ownership of architecture, logic, and quality. Document and improve QA standards, mentor engineers, and help build a confident, automation-first engineering culture.

Benefits

Join a friendly, inclusive team that values flexibility, trust, healthy debate, learning, and shared success. Bauer offers 28 days of annual leave, plus bank holidays and two volunteering days. You will have access to development opportunities through Bauer Academy, enhanced maternity and adoption, paternity, and shared parental leave pay, and flexible working arrangements. The team also enjoys opportunities to connect through workshops, music sessions, and social gatherings when meeting in person.

Equal Opportunity

Bauer Media Group welcomes people in their uniqueness and is committed to equal opportunity. We do not discriminate on the basis of characteristics such as religion, gender, skin colour, or disability. We are committed to making recruitment inclusive and accessible.
