Company Description The Literary Archive (TLA) is a literary, archival, publishing, and public-engagement initiative dedicated to preserving literary heritage and documenting the material lives of books. It supports new writing and fosters accessible conversations around literature, memory, and culture. A project of ILLCR (Private) Limited, TLA integrates archival cataloguing, TLA Magazine, book talks, literary events, research, student training, and collaborative programs. Team members contribute to a dynamic, mission-driven environment that values critical thinking, editorial rigor, and inclusive cultural dialogue.
Role Description The Section Editor (Arts & Culture) for TLA Magazine is a volunteer, remote role focused on planning and curating content for the Arts & Culture section. Day-to-day responsibilities include reviewing pitches and submissions, commissioning pieces aligned with the magazine’s editorial vision, and collaborating with writers to refine ideas and arguments. The role involves substantive and line editing, ensuring clarity, coherence, and adherence to style guidelines, as well as fact-checking and maintaining high editorial standards. The Section Editor will coordinate with the editorial team on issue planning, deadlines, and thematic directions, and may contribute occasional original writing, interviews, or cultural commentary.
Qualifications

  • Strong editorial skills, including substantive editing, line editing, and careful attention to detail in language, structure, and tone.
  • Demonstrated ability in arts and culture writing, literary criticism, or cultural commentary, with an understanding of diverse artistic and literary traditions.
  • Experience managing editorial workflows: reviewing submissions, working with writers, meeting deadlines, and coordinating with an editorial team.
  • Excellent research and fact-checking abilities, with a commitment to accuracy, ethical publishing practices, and intellectual rigor.
  • Clear, inclusive written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to provide constructive, supportive feedback to contributors.
  • Comfort working independently in a remote, digital environment, using online collaboration and project-management tools.
  • Background or strong interest in literature, cultural studies, the arts, or related fields; prior experience with magazines, journals, or publishing is an advantage.
  • Commitment to fostering diverse voices, promoting equitable representation, and engaging wide audiences in conversations about literature and culture.
