Senior Backend Engineer – DevOps & Platform Operations

About SUPERWISE Chat

SUPERWISE Chat is an enterprise, multi-tenant generative AI platform combining conversational AI, governance, persistent memory, knowledge management, enterprise data connectivity, and policy enforcement.

The platform spans TypeScript/Node.js, Python services, PostgreSQL with pgvector, Redis, asynchronous workflows, and containerized cloud infrastructure. At its center is the Cognitive Control Layer (CCL), a multi-stage orchestration pipeline for intent, context, retrieval, policy and guardrail enforcement, LLM interaction, memory, and post-turn workflows.

This is a production enterprise system. Security boundaries, tenant isolation, reliability, observability, auditability, and failure behavior matter as much as feature functionality.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer with strong DevOps and cloud deployment capabilities. You will build and operate reliable backend services while helping own the delivery pipelines, containerized environments, deployment automation, monitoring, and operational reliability that take those services safely to production.

This is a backend-first engineering role, not a dedicated infrastructure-only position. You should be comfortable owning APIs, data models, asynchronous workflows, and security boundaries, as well as diagnosing CI/CD failures, managing environment configuration, and improving cloud deployments. You will collaborate with frontend and product engineers and use agentic development tools while retaining responsibility for architecture, security, and production readiness.

What You Will Own

  • Design, implement, and maintain production backend services using TypeScript/Node.js and/or Python with frameworks such as Express or FastAPI.
  • Own REST APIs, service boundaries, request validation, error handling, rate limiting, and observability.
  • Design PostgreSQL schemas, migrations, indexes, transactions, and query patterns; troubleshoot production database issues.
  • Build asynchronous and event-driven workflows using Redis, queues, background workers, or comparable workflow tools.
  • Design for concurrency, partial failure, retries, timeouts, idempotency, and changing workload volumes.
  • Maintain strict tenant isolation across application, data, retrieval, cache, and asynchronous execution paths.
  • Implement authentication, authorization, OIDC/JWT, RBAC, resource-level permissions, and secure service-to-service access patterns.
  • Build and maintain Docker images and containerized local, preview, staging, and production environments.
  • Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot Git-based CI/CD pipelines, including build, test, security checks, artifact creation, deployment, and rollback steps.
  • Automate deployments and environment-specific configuration while protecting secrets and avoiding configuration drift.
  • Manage application configuration, environment variables, credentials, and service integrations across development, staging, and production.
  • Support cloud deployments on GCP or comparable cloud platforms, including application runtime, networking, storage, IAM, and service configuration as relevant to the application.
  • Improve reliability through health checks, structured logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, and actionable operational dashboards.
  • Investigate production incidents across code, database, pipeline, cloud infrastructure, and external-service boundaries; document root causes and preventive actions.
  • Extend SUPERWISE Chat backend capabilities involving CCL orchestration, LLM providers, tools, retrieval, memory, policy enforcement, guardrails, and post-processing.
  • Build and maintain connectors and retrieval pipelines using PostgreSQL, pgvector, embeddings, external APIs, document systems, and cloud storage.
  • Collaborate with frontend engineers on API contracts, deployment coordination, and end-to-end feature delivery.

DevOps & Platform Responsibilities

  • Own and improve the CI/CD lifecycle from merge request validation through environment deployment and post-deployment verification.
  • Make deployment workflows repeatable, observable, secure, and easy for developers to use.
  • Diagnose pipeline failures involving runners, container builds, permissions, secrets, dependencies, and deployment configuration.
  • Help maintain consistent behavior across developer, preview, staging, and production environments.
  • Implement safe release practices such as environment gates, approvals where required, health checks, rollback procedures, and release verification.
  • Apply infrastructure-as-code or configuration-as-code practices where appropriate to the team's cloud setup.
  • Use least-privilege IAM, secure secret handling, dependency and image hygiene, and environment separation.
  • Establish and maintain useful runbooks for deployments, common failures, incident response, and recovery.
  • Work with engineering and DevOps collaborators to reduce deployment lead time and improve the reliability of cloud previews and releases.

Agentic Engineering Is Part of the Job

  • Use modern AI-assisted and agentic coding systems for backend implementation, tests, pipeline improvements, troubleshooting, and documentation.
  • Translate requirements into structured specifications and clear acceptance criteria before delegating implementation.
  • Review agent-produced code, infrastructure configuration, and pipeline changes using independent engineering judgment.
  • Validate changes with automated tests, static analysis, security checks, deployment evidence, logs, and runtime behavior.
  • Understand and be able to explain, debug, modify, and operate the resulting systems, regardless of how much implementation was AI-assisted.
  • Know when direct engineering intervention is safer or faster than further prompting.

Required Experience

  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with strong production backend engineering experience.
  • Strong experience with TypeScript, Node.js, Python and a modern backend framework such as Express, FastAPI, or Django.
  • Experience designing, building, and operating REST APIs and production services.
  • Strong PostgreSQL experience, including schema design, migrations, indexes, transactions, query optimization, and troubleshooting.
  • Practical experience with Docker and containerized application deployments.
  • Hands-on experience building or maintaining CI/CD pipelines and Git-based development workflows.
  • Experience deploying and supporting applications in GCP comparable cloud platform.
  • Experience managing environment-specific configuration and secrets safely across development, staging, and production.
  • Working knowledge of authentication, authorization, application security, and least-privilege access.
  • Experience with logging, monitoring, health checks, incident diagnosis, and production debugging.
  • Understanding of asynchronous processing, queues, retries, timeouts, and resilient service design.
  • Experience with automated tests, code review, and quality gates in delivery pipelines.
  • Demonstrated use of AI-assisted or agentic coding tools for substantive software-development work, with the ability to explain and validate the resulting implementation.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, take ownership, and balance delivery speed with reliability and security.

Preferred Experience

  • GitLab CI, GitLab runners, Docker Compose, container registries, and multi-stage deployment pipelines.
  • GCP services, IAM, networking, logging, monitoring, and production runtime operations.
  • Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, OpenTofu, Pulumi, or comparable tools.
  • Kubernetes or managed container platforms, where relevant to the existing infrastructure.
  • Redis, background workers, queues, Inngest, or event-driven systems.
  • PostgreSQL Row-Level Security, pgvector, and enterprise retrieval systems.
  • OpenTelemetry, structured logging, metrics, distributed tracing, and alerting.
  • Security scanning, dependency management, container image scanning, and supply-chain security practices.
  • OIDC, OAuth, JWT, enterprise SSO, RBAC, or ABAC.
  • Generative AI / LLM integrations, RAG, agent orchestration, guardrails, or policy enforcement.
  • Experience operating multi-tenant SaaS systems with strong isolation, audit, and compliance requirements.

Technology Environment

  • Backend: Node.js 22+, TypeScript, Express, Zod, Pino, Python/FastAPI
  • Data: PostgreSQL 16, pgvector, Redis 7
  • Workflows and integrations: Inngest, Socket.io, SSE, Stripe, enterprise data connectors
  • Cloud and delivery: GCP, Docker, Docker Compose, GitLab CI, environment-specific deployments
  • Observability: OpenTelemetry, structured logs, metrics, health checks, monitoring
  • AI and platform: CCL orchestration, LLM providers, embeddings, retrieval, tools, guardrails, policy enforcement, persistent memory
  • Security: OIDC, JWT, Frontegg, RBAC, PostgreSQL RLS, least-privilege access

Exact prior experience with every technology is not required. We value transferable backend and operational engineering depth, strong fundamentals, and the ability to become productive quickly in adjacent technologies.

What Strong Performance Looks Like

  • Independently deliver backend capabilities and operate them reliably in production.
  • Keep CI/CD pipelines dependable and make deployments repeatable, diagnosable, and safe.
  • Reduce manual release steps and configuration drift across environments.
  • Diagnose failures using evidence from logs, metrics, traces, pipeline output, and runtime behavior.
  • Anticipate security, tenant isolation, data integrity, failure recovery, and operational concerns before they become incidents.
  • Improve delivery speed through automation without compromising reliability, security, or maintainability.
  • Take ownership from API and database design through deployment, monitoring, and production support.

What We Value

  • Engineering judgment: Understand why systems work and how they may fail.
  • Operational ownership: Treat deployment, observability, reliability, and recovery as part of engineering.
  • Security thinking: Build identity, authorization, secret management, and tenant boundaries into system design.
  • Automation mindset: Reduce repetitive work through reliable pipelines and tooling.
  • Agentic leverage: Use AI to multiply strong engineering judgment rather than substitute for it.
  • Candor and collaboration: Communicate clearly, share evidence, and work effectively across product and engineering.
