Senior Data Engineer (Data Applications) | Amsterdam, hybrid

Build the data layer of an application that helps Ag & Food companies make a measurable sustainability impact.

Who are we hiring for?

This customer is an Amsterdam based startup company building a Sustainability Data Platform. They’re a team of about 40 people building technology for agriculture and food sustainability. Our values shape how we work and decide: Accept the challenge. Commit to learn. Authentic & accountable. Make momentum. Simplify & ship.

The role

We’re looking for senior data engineers who have built data applications, not just standalone pipelines. In our platform, the data layer is part of the application itself rather than a separate pipeline estate that feeds it from the side. You’ll design and build the data models, pipelines and APIs that power our insights platform, and you’ll own them as part of the product, with performance, data integrity and security built in from the start.

You’ll work in a product team alongside full-stack engineers (backend and frontend) and platform engineers. Data engineers are full members of that team. You’ll shape the architecture together, turn business needs into reliable, maintainable solutions, and ship end to end.

How we build: we work spec-first. You write the specification, the team reviews it, and an agent implements against it. Your name is on both the spec and the commit. That means less time typing code and more time on requirements, system design, acceptance criteria and review. We don’t ship code we don’t understand.

What you bring

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent (a Master’s is a plus)
  • 7+ years in data engineering, including 2+ as a Senior Engineer
  • Proven experience building data applications, where pipelines, storage and APIs are designed together with the application they serve
  • Strong Python, plus experience with a stack like ours: FastAPI, Airflow, BigQuery, PostgreSQL and Terraform
  • Hands-on experience with EL, ETL and ELT integration patterns
  • Solid grounding in software design and architecture, including data lakes and warehouses, for structured and unstructured data
  • Day-to-day use of AI coding tools, and clear opinions on where they help and where they quietly create tech debt
  • Clear communication and a mentoring instinct, and comfort working closely with backend, frontend and platform colleagues

Nice to have: Google Cloud data pipeline services, streaming tools, data management and governance, and geospatial analytics (raster and vector data, spatial aggregation, visualization workflows).

What we offer

  • Real ownership and autonomy, and encouragement to grow beyond your specialism
  • A fast-growing platform with a clear purpose
  • A close, diverse team of about 40
  • Competitive salary, employee participation plan (SARs) and company pension
  • 25 paid holidays, 2 diversity days and public holidays, with the option to swap 3 Dutch public holidays for other festive days that matter to you
  • Hybrid working (minimum 3 office days a week) and 2 weeks of remote working a year
  • Commuting allowance of €0.25 per km, tax-free, up to 20 km each way
  • Laptop, home-office equipment and a learning and development budget
  • Above-statutory leave for maternity, paternity, adoption and other life events
  • Regular lunch & learns, where we share our food cultures
  • An office a short walk from Amsterdam Sloterdijk Station
