Role Description The Senior HSE Specialist will provide expert guidance and oversight on health, safety, and environmental (HSE) matters across UN-Habitat’s remote and field-based activities. This part-time, remote role includes developing and updating HSE policies, procedures, and guidelines aligned with international standards and UN best practices. The specialist will conduct risk assessments, review project plans for HSE compliance, and support incident reporting, investigation, and corrective actions. Daily tasks include advising project teams on occupational health and safety, monitoring environmental performance, and preparing concise reports and recommendations for management. The role also involves designing and delivering virtual HSE training and awareness sessions, supporting continuous improvement of HSE culture, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to promote safe, resilient, and sustainable work practices.
Qualifications
- Candidates should possess strong Environment Health and Safety (EHS) and Health & Safety expertise, including familiarity with international HSE standards and risk management practices.
- Candidates should possess Environmental Awareness skills, with the ability to integrate environmental considerations into policies, procedures, and project implementation.
- Candidates should possess Occupational Health knowledge, including assessment of workplace conditions, prevention measures, and support for staff well-being.
- Candidates should possess Training skills, with experience in designing and delivering HSE-related training, workshops, and awareness programs, preferably in remote or multicultural settings.
- Relevant academic qualification in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Public Health, or a related field; professional certifications in HSE (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH) are an asset.
- Demonstrated experience in HSE roles within international organizations, NGOs, or complex projects, ideally in urban development or humanitarian contexts.
- Strong analytical, reporting, and communication skills, with the ability to provide clear guidance to diverse, cross-functional teams.
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting, manage multiple priorities, and collaborate effectively across cultures and time zones.
