Position Summary
The Senior Software Engineer is a hands-on application engineer responsible for designing, building, testing, deploying, and supporting modern production software across multiple projects.
This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems and contributing directly to the codebase. You will work across modern web applications, backend services, cloud infrastructure, and data-intensive systems while collaborating closely with other developers, product stakeholders, and scientific teams.
Strong, recent JavaScript/TypeScript experience is required, with the ability to contribute to existing applications with minimal ramp-up. The role also supports the responsible use of AI-assisted development and AI-enabled capabilities, with engineers remaining accountable for the quality, security, reliability, and maintainability of the software they deliver.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, debug, deploy, and maintain production applications and services.
- Build and enhance modern web applications using JavaScript/TypeScript and related frontend and backend frameworks.
- Contribute across the application stack, including frontend interfaces, backend services, APIs, databases, and cloud infrastructure.
- Translate product and scientific requirements into practical technical designs and working software.
- Participate in application and system design decisions involving APIs, service boundaries, data flows, integrations, security, reliability, and maintainability.
- Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code and participate actively in peer code reviews.
- Develop and maintain automated testing and CI/CD practices that support reliable software delivery.
- Deploy and support applications in AWS environments, including monitoring, troubleshooting, performance optimization, and production support.
- Diagnose complex production issues using logs, metrics, traces, and other observability tools; participate in root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Collaborate with and mentor other developers through design discussions, code reviews, pair programming, and technical problem-solving.
- Use AI-assisted engineering tools to accelerate development while independently reviewing and validating generated code, tests, designs, and recommendations.
- Identify opportunities to improve application quality, engineering productivity, automation, performance, and reliability.
- Communicate technical decisions, risks, and tradeoffs clearly to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- Typically 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated experience building and supporting production applications.
- Strong, recent hands-on JavaScript/TypeScript development experience**, with the ability to independently develop, debug, review, test, and maintain production code.
- Strong experience with modern web application development using technologies such as **React, Next.js, Node.js, or comparable JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks**.
- Experience building backend services, APIs, and production applications using Node.js, Python, or comparable modern technologies.
- Demonstrated experience taking software from requirements through design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
- Experience designing and integrating REST, GraphQL, event-driven, or similar application interfaces.
- Hands-on cloud experience, preferably AWS, including deployment, troubleshooting, monitoring, and production operations.
- Strong experience with software design, automated testing, code review, CI/CD, debugging, observability, and root-cause analysis.
- Experience with relational or NoSQL databases and application data modeling.
- Recent experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or similar tools, with the judgment to independently evaluate and validate generated work.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and nontechnical teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on AWS experience supporting modern production applications.
- Experience with Terraform, CloudFormation, or comparable infrastructure-as-code tools.
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and modern CI/CD platforms.
- Experience designing microservice, event-driven, or distributed application architectures.
- Experience with data ingestion, data-validation workflows, or data-intensive applications.
- Experience building analytical or data-rich user interfaces using technologies such as D3.js or similar visualization libraries.
- Experience integrating LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), agents, semantic search, or other AI-enabled capabilities into production applications.
- Experience evaluating AI-enabled systems for quality, privacy, security, observability, fallback behavior, performance, and cost.
- Experience mentoring other software engineers and contributing to technical standards and engineering best practices.
- Experience supporting healthcare, biomedical, scientific, or federal government environments.
- Interest in biomedical research, particularly infectious diseases.
