About the RoleThe Senior Histopathology Slide Quality Specialist is responsible for supporting the quality assessment, technical review, and documentation of histopathology slides through secure digital pathology systems. The role focuses on evaluating digitised slide quality, reviewing staining consistency, assessing tissue representation, identifying technical artefacts, and monitoring compliance with established histopathology laboratory quality standards.
Working remotely with histotechnologists, histopathologists, laboratory quality teams, and diagnostic service managers, the specialist helps maintain reliable slide preparation and review processes. The position is focused on digital image quality assessment, technical documentation, quality monitoring, and workflow improvement. Physical tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, slide preparation, and laboratory equipment operation must be performed by qualified local laboratory personnel. Diagnostic interpretation and clinical reporting remain the responsibility of appropriately licensed pathologists.
- Review digitised histopathology slides to assess image quality, technical suitability, and compliance with established laboratory criteria.
- Evaluate tissue representation, section integrity, staining consistency, and image completeness within approved quality review procedures.
- Identify technical artefacts, including folds, chatter, compression, air bubbles, staining irregularities, tissue detachment, and other image-related limitations.
- Assess whether digitised slides are suitable for remote pathological review based on image resolution, focus, colour consistency, and scanning completeness.
- Review documentation associated with tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, coverslipping, and slide preparation.
- Monitor slide quality indicators and identify recurring technical issues across specimens, batches, and laboratory workflows.
- Evaluate quality records relating to routine histological stains, special stains, and immunohistochemistry documentation.
- Review available staining control records and quality control evidence for completeness and consistency.
- Identify slides requiring rescanning, technical clarification, additional quality checks, or referral to local laboratory personnel.
- Document slide quality concerns, nonconformities, review outcomes, and recommended corrective actions.
- Support the development and maintenance of digital slide quality assessment criteria, checklists, and standard operating procedures.
- Analyse trends in slide rejection, rescanning frequency, staining deviations, and specimen preparation issues.
- Assist with remote root-cause analysis of recurring slide quality problems using laboratory records and supporting evidence.
- Review corrective and preventive action plans and monitor documented implementation progress.
- Support quality assessments of digital pathology scanners, image management systems, and slide archiving workflows through review of performance records.
- Evaluate documentation relating to scanner calibration, image capture consistency, system maintenance, and technical verification.
- Collaborate remotely with histology laboratory teams to resolve documentation gaps and clarify technical quality concerns.
- Prepare quality dashboards, technical summaries, audit reports, and management review materials.
- Support internal audits, accreditation preparation, and external quality assessment activities involving histopathology slide quality.
- Contribute to the standardisation of slide quality criteria across laboratory locations and diagnostic service teams.
- Participate in virtual training and knowledge-sharing sessions on histological slide quality, digital image assessment, and quality documentation.
- Maintain accurate and traceable records of slide reviews, identified defects, escalations, and corrective actions.
- Protect patient information, diagnostic images, and laboratory records in accordance with applicable confidentiality and information security requirements.
- Bachelor's degree in Histotechnology, Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science, Pathology Laboratory Science, or a related discipline.
- Postgraduate qualification in Histopathology, Laboratory Quality Management, Biomedical Science, or a related field is preferred.
- Significant experience in histopathology laboratory operations, slide quality assurance, histotechnology, or diagnostic laboratory quality management.
- Strong understanding of histological tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, and slide preparation workflows.
- Knowledge of routine histological staining methods, including haematoxylin and eosin, and familiarity with special stains and immunohistochemistry.
- Experience assessing histological slide quality, tissue integrity, staining consistency, and common technical artefacts.
- Familiarity with digital pathology systems, whole-slide imaging, slide scanning, and image quality assessment.
- Understanding of image resolution, focus quality, colour balance, scanning completeness, and digital slide suitability.
- Experience reviewing laboratory quality control records, nonconformity reports, and corrective and preventive action documentation.
- Knowledge of laboratory quality management systems and recognised medical laboratory accreditation standards.
- Familiarity with histopathology laboratory information systems, digital slide repositories, and electronic quality management platforms.
- Ability to analyse quality indicators and identify trends affecting slide preparation and digital image reliability.
- Strong documentation and technical report-writing skills.
- Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail when reviewing complex laboratory records and digital images.
- Ability to communicate effectively with histotechnologists, pathologists, laboratory managers, and quality assurance professionals.
- Understanding of patient confidentiality, data protection, and secure handling of digital diagnostic material.
- Relevant professional registration or certification, where required for the applicable technical responsibilities.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple quality reviews, and collaborate effectively in a fully remote environment.
- A 100% remote working arrangement based in the United Arab Emirates.
- Opportunities to contribute to histopathology quality assurance and digital pathology improvement.
- Collaboration with laboratory, pathology, and healthcare quality professionals.
- Opportunities for continued professional development in histotechnology, digital pathology, and laboratory quality systems.
- A technically focused role involving slide quality assessment, documentation review, and continuous improvement.
Interested candidates should submit an updated CV highlighting their experience in histopathology, histotechnology, digital pathology, laboratory quality assurance, or slide quality assessment.
