Staff Level Flutter Engineer

We’re looking for a Staff Flutter Engineer to play a key role in building and scaling our mobile applications. This is a hands-on technical leadership role for an engineer who can operate across architecture, product development, engineering standards, and mentorship.

The Role

As a Staff Flutter Engineer, you will own the technical direction and execution of our Flutter mobile applications. You’ll work closely with product managers, designers, backend engineers, QA, DevOps, and clinical/product stakeholders to deliver secure, reliable, and intuitive healthcare experiences.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Architecture

• Own and evolve the architecture of PsychPlus's Flutter applications.
• Establish scalable patterns for application structure, state management, dependency injection, navigation, networking, and local persistence.
• Make pragmatic technical decisions balancing scalability, performance, maintainability, security, and speed of delivery.
• Define and promote mobile engineering standards, best practices, and coding conventions.
• Lead technical design discussions and architecture reviews.
• Identify technical debt and establish strategies to reduce it over time.
• Drive architectural consistency across mobile and backend integrations.

Flutter Development

• Design and develop high-quality production applications using Flutter and Dart.
• Build reusable, maintainable, and testable UI components and application modules.
• Integrate REST/GraphQL APIs, authentication systems, analytics, notifications, and third-party services.
• Implement robust error handling, offline/poor-network scenarios, caching, and application state management.
• Optimize application performance, startup time, memory usage, rendering, and battery consumption.
• Work with native iOS and Android capabilities when Flutter alone is insufficient.
• Participate in code reviews and maintain a high engineering quality bar.

Healthcare & Security

• Build applications with strong attention to privacy, security, reliability, and data protection.
• Follow healthcare technology and compliance requirements, including applicable HIPAA requirements.
• Ensure sensitive patient and clinical information is handled securely throughout the application lifecycle.
• Collaborate with security, infrastructure, and backend teams to implement secure authentication, authorization, data storage, logging, and monitoring.
• Design systems with appropriate safeguards against data leakage and unauthorized access.

Engineering Excellence

• Establish and improve automated testing strategies, including unit, widget, integration, and end-to-end testing.
• Improve CI/CD pipelines and mobile release processes.
• Establish observability and production monitoring for mobile applications.
• Investigate and resolve complex production issues.
• Define engineering metrics and practices that improve reliability and development velocity.
• Contribute to technical documentation and engineering standards.

Technical Mentorship

• Mentor senior and mid-level engineers and help them grow technically.
• Provide thoughtful, constructive code reviews.
• Help engineers make sound architectural and implementation decisions.
• Lead technical initiatives across multiple teams when required.
• Promote a culture of ownership, engineering excellence, and continuous learning.

Product Collaboration

• Partner with Product and Design to translate complex requirements into simple, intuitive mobile experiences.
• Participate in product discovery and technical feasibility discussions.
• Help break large initiatives into practical technical milestones.
• Balance technical quality with business and product priorities.
• Advocate for accessibility, usability, and a high-quality patient experience.

Required Qualifications

7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant experience building production mobile applications.

• 5+ years of hands-on Flutter/Dart experience or equivalent deep expertise with Flutter.
• Strong understanding of Flutter architecture, widget lifecycle, rendering, navigation, and application performance.
• Strong Dart programming skills and understanding of asynchronous programming, isolates, streams, futures, and concurrency.
• Proven experience designing and maintaining scalable mobile application architectures.
• Strong experience with state management patterns/frameworks such as BLoC/Cubit, Riverpod, Provider, or equivalent.
• Strong experience integrating RESTful APIs and backend services.
• Experience with authentication and authorization flows, including OAuth2/OIDC or similar technologies.
• Strong understanding of mobile application security and secure data handling.
• Experience writing automated unit, widget, integration, and end-to-end tests.
• Experience with CI/CD and automated mobile application deployment.
• Strong Git and software development workflow knowledge.
• Experience working in Agile/Scrum or similar product development environments.
• Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives across teams.
• Excellent communication, problem-solving, and mentoring skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience building healthcare, telehealth, fintech, or other highly regulated applications.
• Experience working with HIPAA, SOC 2, or similar compliance/security requirements.
• Experience with Firebase services such as Crashlytics, Analytics, Cloud Messaging, Remote Config, or App Distribution.
• Experience with native Swift/iOS and/or Kotlin/Android development.
• Experience with GraphQL.
• Experience with real-time communication technologies such as WebSockets.
• Experience implementing video/audio communication or telehealth functionality.
• Experience with push notifications, deep linking, universal/app links, and background processing.
• Experience with mobile observability and crash/performance monitoring.
• Experience leading large-scale Flutter migrations or establishing Flutter platforms from the ground up.
• Experience contributing to engineering strategy and technical roadmaps.
