Strategic Finance Manager (Subscription DTC)
Company Overview
It is a fast-growing direct-to-consumer brand selling supplements and wellness products. Most of its revenue comes from subscriptions. Customers buy through the brand's online store and stay on recurring product subscriptions and memberships. The business is at a stage where growth spend, inventory, and cash all have to be planned together.
Mission
Help the brand grow profitably. You'll be a hands-on finance operator working directly with leadership, and you'll give the Growth, Retention, and Supply Chain teams one shared plan: what the business can spend, what inventory it needs, and how much cash it takes to fund both.
Responsibilities
Acquisition Budget
- Recommend weekly ad spend and customer acquisition cost (CAC) limits by channel and offer.
- Tie those limits to payback period, available inventory, and cash on hand.
Cohort and Offer Profitability
- Track contribution per acquired customer at 30, 60, 90, and 180 days, including product, shipping, fulfillment, fees, and refunds.
- Compare cumulative contribution against CAC to measure payback.
- Model how pricing, bundles, gifts, and subscription incentives affect profitability.
Subscription Forecasting
- Forecast first orders, renewals, and shipments using Shopify and subscription-platform data.
- Model billing cadence, churn, skips, and failed payments.
- Track product subscriptions and memberships as separate revenue streams.
Cash and Inventory Planning
- Maintain a weekly rolling 13-week cash forecast covering ad spend, inventory deposits, supplier balances, payroll, and payment processor payouts.
- Work with Supply Chain on the timing and cash impact of purchase orders.
Operating Performance
- Reconcile the operating view with the accounting records.
- Review monthly actuals against budget, explain margin changes, and recommend actions.
- Report company profit after overhead alongside cohort contribution.
First 90 Days
- By day 30: reconcile the core data inputs, build the first cash forecast, and set baseline contribution for the hero product's customer cohorts by offer.
- By day 60: build one integrated model connecting acquisition spend, subscriber renewals, purchase commitments, and cash.
- By day 90: run a weekly finance review and recommend a growth budget with guardrails for CAC, payback, margin, and cash.
Requirements
Must Have
- Personally owned forecasting and spend decisions at an eight-figure subscription DTC brand that sells physical products.
- Hands-on financial modeling of cohort contribution, CAC payback, and subscription renewals.
- Experience building and maintaining a 13-week cash forecast that covers inventory and supplier payments.
- Experience with Shopify plus a subscription platform such as Loop, Recharge, or Skio.
- Can point to a specific spend or inventory decision their analysis changed.
- Separates profit from cash in their models, keeps assumptions visible, and makes clear recommendations.
- Strong written and spoken English, and comfortable working directly with a founder or executive.
Nice to Have
- Background in supplements, wellness, or other replenishable consumer products.
- Experience modeling memberships alongside product subscriptions.
- Previous titles such as Growth Finance Manager, FP&A Manager, Finance Business Partner (Growth), or Head of Finance at a smaller subscription brand.
- Experience working closely with supply chain on purchase order planning.
Tools
- Shopify
- Subscription platforms: Loop (preferred), Recharge, Skio
- Excel / Google Sheets (advanced financial modeling)
- Accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks or Xero)
- Ad platform reporting (Meta, Google)
Success Metrics
- A 13-week cash forecast that is live and updated weekly within the first 30 days.
- Baseline cohort contribution and CAC payback set by offer.
- An integrated spend, renewals, inventory, and cash model delivered by day 60.
- A weekly finance review running by day 90, with a growth budget and clear guardrails.
- Forecast accuracy for renewals and cash improves against actuals over time.
- Spend decisions are made against agreed CAC, payback, and cash-floor limits.
