Every day, millions of Australians connect, work, stream, and stay in touch on the Optus network. When it works seamlessly, it’s easy to take for granted. But behind it is a team making thousands of decisions every day - decisions that keep people, businesses and communities connected.
Right now, Optus is focused on getting the fundamentals right - simplifying how we work, lifting standards, and building a more reliable, resilient experience for our customers.
It’s not about surface-level change. It’s about how we make decisions, how we work together, and how we deliver.
As a Systems Engineer will be responsible for assisting other members of the team to support innovative technical solutions to address customer requirements and government initiatives through the solution’s life cycle.
The Day to Day
- Assist senior engineers in delivering end-to-end solutions across the technology lifecycle, from development through to operations
- Contribute to highly available, secure, and scalable systems, maintaining reliability of critical regulatory platforms
- Partner with internal teams and external stakeholders, including government and law enforcement agencies, to support solution delivery and operations
- Participate in security risk assessments and help maintain security architecture in regulated environments
- Support continuous improvement through modern engineering practices, automation, and evolving technologies.
What You Bring
- Experience in systems engineering, infrastructure, or network engineering, ideally within telecommunications or regulated environments
- Experience in programming, software development and building web APIs
- Knowledge of data networks, servers, and storage technologies, with exposure to distributed systems
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) to assist in operating on-premises solutions using cloud-native patterns and contemporary tooling
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Computer Science/Engineering; cybersecurity certifications are an advantage
The good stuff

- Competitive leave policies, including additional 'Connected’ days to focus on culture, family, health, community, or whatever’s important to you.
- We support growing families with inclusive, carer-neutral paid Parental Leave of up to 16 weeks.
- Build meaningful connections through colleague-led networks and diversity initiatives including Culture Connect, Elevate Women, Disability Network, and Express Yourself (LGBTQIA+).

Not every box ticked? Apply anyway. We believe the right mindset matter more than a perfect CV. We’ll back you to grow from there.
