Ventaris Surgical is seeking a VP of Sales & Marketing/Chief Commercial Officer to build the company's commercial function from the ground up and serve as a trusted partner to the CEO and leadership team. This is a critical hire for a business at an exciting stage of growth. Because our lead product is an investigational device not yet cleared for commercial sale, this is a market-building and launch-readiness role today: the VP will own the commercial plan, forecast, and budget; market development; commercial KOL and physician relationships; brand and downstream marketing; and the design of the go-to-market and sales infrastructure that will activate at launch.

About Ventaris Surgical
Ventaris Surgical is a venture-backed medical device company founded in 2024 and headquartered in San Carlos, California. Backed by leading MedTech investors following a $30 million Series A financing, we are developing a next-generation ureteroscopic system designed to help surgeons achieve more complete kidney stone clearance in a single procedure while reducing the physical and cognitive burden of treatment.
Kidney stone disease is one of the world's most common urologic conditions. Nearly 1 in 10 people will experience a kidney stone in their lifetime, and more than 500,000 people undergo kidney stone surgery in the U.S. each year. Yet today's tools make it difficult for surgeons to consistently achieve complete stone clearance. Our vision is simple: every patient stone-free through a single procedure.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial Strategy & Market Development
- Define and continuously refine Ventaris's commercial strategy, target market segmentation, and positioning ahead of product launch, starting from clear, testable hypotheses and refining them with market and clinical data
- Own the commercial plan: revenue forecast, commercial budget, and the leading indicators that show early whether the launch is working
- Lead market research and competitive intelligence to sharpen product differentiation and pricing strategy
- Partner with clinical, regulatory, and reimbursement teams to shape a coverage and reimbursement strategy that supports commercial adoption, and own the economic value story for hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers, from value analysis committees to GPO and IDN contracting
Physician & KOL Relationships
- Build and nurture relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs), early champions, and urologist advisory boards to inform product development, clinical evidence generation, and future adoption, in coordination with our clinical team, which leads investigator relationships
- Establish early relationships with distributors, GPOs, or strategic partners as appropriate to the market entry plan
Brand & Marketing
- Develop the brand, messaging, and marketing strategy for the ureteroscopic system, including pre-launch physician education and awareness campaigns
- Build launch-readiness materials, including sales collateral, training materials, and trade show and conference presence
Sales Organization & Launch Readiness
- Design the future sales organization: territory strategy, headcount plan, compensation and quota structure, and hiring plan for sales leadership, reps, and clinical specialists ahead of launch
- Design the limited market release: site-selection criteria, sequencing, and success measures
- Recruit, lead, and develop the field sales leadership team, including the field sales leader, and attract top urology sales talent as the organization scales
- Build CRM and sales-ops infrastructure that can scale as the company moves from development-stage to commercial-stage operations
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Represent the commercial perspective in cross-functional planning with R&D, clinical, and regulatory teams
- Partner with the CEO on board meetings and investor communications, presenting and defending the commercial plan, including during financings
- Thrive in ambiguity and bring structure to unstructured situations, proactively identifying what the company needs before being asked
Startup Commercial Mindset
- Wear multiple hats and take ownership across the full commercial spectrum, from KOL outreach to presenting go-to-market plans to leadership
- Build commercial infrastructure that is right-sized for today while positioned to scale as the company grows headcount, revenue, and complexity
- Bring a scrappy, get-it-done attitude while still maintaining the rigor and credibility that physicians, investors, and regulators expect
Requirements
- 10+ years of sales and/or marketing leadership experience in medical devices, with direct experience in urology, endourology, or another minimally invasive surgical specialty strongly preferred
- A track record of launching a differentiated technology into an established, competitive category and winning share from well-resourced incumbents
- Prior experience in a startup or early-stage company, ideally building a commercial function ahead of a product's FDA clearance/approval
- Hands-on experience building a commercial plan from scratch: forecast, budget, territories, compensation and quotas, and launch metrics
- Established relationships with, or credibility among, urologists and KOLs in the stone disease/endourology space is highly preferred
- Strong grasp of medical device reimbursement, health economics, and the regulatory landscape affecting commercial launch timing
- Comfortable managing competing priorities and working independently without a large commercial team around you
- Clear, confident communicator who can represent Ventaris credibly with physicians, investors, and department heads
- Experience presenting and defending a commercial plan to a board and investors
- High integrity, sound judgment, and a genuine comfort with the ambiguity and pace that comes with working at a small, fast-moving company
- Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive commercial and company information with discretion
Education
- Bachelor's degree required
- MBA is a plus but not required
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in the medical device, diagnostics, or broader life sciences sector, or another regulated industry
- Prior work at a venture-backed startup navigating the transition from development-stage to commercial-stage operations
- Familiarity with FDA-regulated environments and an understanding of how regulatory and development timelines affect commercial launch planning
- Hands-on experience building or optimizing CRM and sales-ops platforms in a startup context
- Experience commercializing a capital-plus-disposable system through hospital value analysis committees and ambulatory surgery centers
Why Join Ventaris
- High impact from day one: we are a small team, and every role is mission-critical
- A clear, compelling vision: every patient stone-free through a single procedure
- A rare moment to help define a new standard of care, at a point when the field is still shifting away from incremental improvements
- Backed by leading MedTech investors following a $30 million Series A financing
- A low-ego, high-accountability culture grounded in collaboration, candor, and conviction
Who We're Looking For
- We are a values-based company. Our values guide how we work and make decisions:
- Collaboration: Time and attention are finite. Meetings are purposeful. Own your work, be accountable, and drive to closure. Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.
- Candor: Speak up early, directly, and respectfully. Debate ideas, not people. Raise concerns when they are small. Avoid politics, passivity, and condescension.
- Conviction: Let the mission guide every decision. Make hard tradeoffs for the collective good. Focus on getting it right over being right. Challenge each other, then commit fully.
