At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Introduction
The CERN ATLAS Team plays a major role in the construction of the future silicon ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk). In particular, the CERN Detector Technologies (DT) team focuses on the realisation of the Pixel Outer Barrel for the ITk. Our activities include the design, prototyping and assembly of the support structures and tooling as well as the final detector integration, installation and testing. As a mechanical/electromechanical technician in the CERN-DT Team, you will join the Engineering Office Section (EP-DT-EO) and work closely with personnel from the ATLAS Group (EP-ATL) and the Technical Coordination Team of the ATLAS Experiment in the design and construction of the ATLAS ITk Pixel Outer Barrel.
Functions
- Participate in the production, testing and installation of the Pixel Outer System services and their support structures (e.g. trolleys).
- Support the design, manufacturing and installation of temporary services and infrastructure for testing during the integration of the Pixel Detector.
- Participate hands-on in the integration of the Pixel Outer System and its insertion into ITk in the SR1 cleanroom, contributing to the development and fabrication of the corresponding tooling.
- Participate in the ITk installation in the ATLAS cavern, supporting preparation of Pixel services for installation as well as connections after insertion.
- Document manufacturing and installation procedures as well QC information of tools and production parts to ensure traceability.
Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Precision Mechanics or a related field.
Experience:
- Demonstrated experience in conventional precision machining of metallic and non-metallic parts, using both conventional and non-conventional methods.
- Good understanding of mechanical and electrical drawings, including geometrical tolerance specifications.
- Demonstrated experience in the assembly of complex, high precision mechanical systems with high quality standards.
- Proven experience in manufacturing and installation of cable bundles and harnesses.
- Proven experience with of structural joining techniques, particularly adhesive bonding and orbital welding.
Experience in the following areas would be considered an asset:
- Previous experience in computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines.
- Experience in the use of CAD software (ideally Catia V5) for the 2D and 3D modelling.
- Previous experience in CAD-CAM programming (preferably using WORKNC).
Technical competencies:
- Manufacturing of mechanical parts.
- Knowledge and application of joining techniques, glueing, welding.
- Production of 2D drawings and 3D models (ISO dimensioning, tolerancing).
- Programming and use of CNC machine-tools and machining centres.
- Precision assembly of mechanical structures and equipment
Behavioural competencies:
- Achieving Results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations.
- Demonstrating Flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
- Working in Teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.
- Solving Problems: adopting a pragmatic approach; understanding the value of adopting generic rather than ‘gold -plated' technical solutions.
- Managing Self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.
