With a strong focus on technical excellence, operational efficiency and continuous improvement, the business offers an excellent opportunity to join a skilled engineering team and play a key role in managing and developing workshop operations.
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Workshop Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of a busy engineering and manufacturing workshop based in London.
This role will involve managing a skilled team of machinists, welders, fitters and engineering technicians, ensuring components and assemblies are manufactured efficiently, safely and to the required quality standards.
Working closely with senior management and engineering teams, you will be responsible for coordinating workshop activities, optimising machinery utilisation and driving improvements across manufacturing processes.
This is an excellent opportunity for a technically experienced Workshop Manager who enjoys leading teams while remaining actively involved in hands-on engineering and manufacturing activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the workshop, ensuring manufacturing activities are completed safely, efficiently and to schedule.
- Lead, supervise and support a team of machinists, welders, mechanical fitters and engineering technicians.
- Plan and coordinate workshop workloads, allocating resources and prioritising production requirements.
- Oversee the manufacture of precision components, mechanical assemblies and engineered equipment.
- Support both repeat manufacturing activities and the production of prototype or development components.
- Remain hands-on with workshop machinery and manufacturing activities when required.
- Oversee the safe and effective operation of equipment, including milling machines, lathes, laser cutters and other workshop machinery.
- Ensure components and assemblies meet the required quality standards throughout the manufacturing process.
- Identify and resolve production issues, minimising delays, defects and unnecessary rework.
- Promote safe working practices and ensure workshop activities comply with relevant health and safety procedures.
- Maintain high standards of workshop organisation, cleanliness, equipment maintenance and housekeeping.
- Monitor production progress, workshop performance and resource utilisation, providing regular updates to senior management.
- Work closely with engineering, quality and production teams to improve manufacturing processes and operational efficiency.
- Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance productivity, quality and workshop performance.
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Previous experience managing or supervising an engineering workshop or manufacturing team, ideally with at least 2–3 years in a leadership position.
- Strong hands-on background in mechanical engineering, machining, fabrication or industrial manufacturing.
- Experience managing technical teams, including machinists, welders, fitters or engineering technicians.
- Practical knowledge of workshop machinery, including milling machines, lathes and associated manufacturing equipment.
- Experience planning production workloads, allocating resources and managing workshop priorities.
- Good understanding of manufacturing processes, production workflows and quality control requirements.
- Strong knowledge of workshop health and safety procedures and safe working practices.
- Proven ability to identify operational inefficiencies and implement practical improvements.
- Strong leadership, communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to monitor performance and report production progress effectively to senior management.
Desirable:
- Experience managing a multidisciplinary workshop involving machining, welding, fabrication and mechanical assembly.
- Familiarity with CNC machinery, laser cutting or pipe-bending equipment.
- Experience supporting prototype manufacturing, low-volume production or engineering development projects.
- Previous involvement in workshop expansion, equipment installations or manufacturing process improvements.
- Understanding of production planning systems, manufacturing documentation and workflow management.
- Experience working closely with engineering and quality teams to improve manufacturability and reduce defects.
- A proactive, hands-on leadership style with the ability to support technical teams in resolving complex manufacturing challenges.
What's on Offer
- Competitive salary of £50,000–£70,000 depending on experience.
- Equity or share option opportunities.
- Private healthcare.
- Generous annual leave arrangements.
- Relocation support where applicable.
- Opportunity to lead and develop a skilled engineering workshop team.
- Access to modern manufacturing machinery and workshop equipment.
- The chance to influence workshop operations, manufacturing processes and continuous improvement initiatives.
