Environmental Consultant / Domain Advisor — Independent Contractor

Location: Indonesia — Remote

Engagement: Independent Contractor / Project-Based

Time Commitment: Approximately 10 hours per week for 3–4 weeks

About Akaris

Akaris Software is an American early-stage software startup building tools to help environmental consultants and environmental professionals in Indonesia manage environmental compliance workflows more efficiently.

Our founding and engineering team is based in the United States, while our initial product focus is the Indonesian environmental consulting and compliance market.

We are developing software around processes such as AMDAL, KA-ANDAL, ANDAL, RKL-RPL, UKL-UPL, environmental monitoring, permitting, document preparation, evidence management, and regulatory compliance.

We are looking for an experienced Indonesian environmental consultant to work with our product team as a short-term Environmental Domain Advisor.

What You’ll Do

This is not a traditional full-time environmental consulting position. Your role will be to help the Akaris team understand how environmental consulting projects are actually carried out in Indonesia and help us ensure that our software reflects real professional practice.

You will:

  • Walk our team through environmental consulting projects from beginning to end.
  • Explain how AMDAL, UKL-UPL, RKL-RPL, and related environmental permitting processes are handled in practice.
  • Explain how consultants collect information from clients, coordinate with laboratories and technical specialists, prepare environmental documents, handle revisions, and interact with government agencies.
  • Explain how AMDALNET, OSS RBA, and other relevant systems fit into environmental consulting and permitting workflows.
  • Help us understand what information, documents, evidence, approvals, and reviews are required at different stages of a project.
  • Explain common delays, bottlenecks, repetitive tasks, client issues, revision cycles, and other pain points experienced by environmental consultants.
  • Participate in regular discussions with the Akaris team.
  • Test features in the Akaris application and provide practical feedback.
  • Review workflows, terminology, document structures, assumptions, and software-generated content for realism and accuracy.
  • Identify missing steps, incorrect assumptions, or information that an experienced environmental consultant would expect.
  • Suggest improvements and potential product features.
  • Answer environmental-domain questions from our product and engineering team.
  • Perform limited research on environmental regulations, professional practices, or government processes when necessary.

We are especially interested in understanding the difference between formal regulatory requirements and how environmental consulting work is actually performed in practice.

Who We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone with:

  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in environmental consulting in Indonesia, particularly environmental document preparation, permitting, or environmental assessment work.
  • Hands-on experience preparing or substantially contributing to environmental documents such as AMDAL, UKL-UPL, and RKL-RPL.
  • Experience working on multiple environmental consulting projects, preferably for different clients or projects.
  • Practical understanding of environmental document preparation, review, revisions, submissions, and approval processes.
  • Experience coordinating with clients, technical specialists, laboratories, government agencies, or other parties involved in environmental projects.
  • Strong knowledge of Indonesian environmental regulations and permitting requirements.
  • The ability to clearly explain complex environmental processes to people who are not environmental consultants.
  • Comfort using software and testing new digital tools.
  • A willingness to provide candid feedback when something in the application does not reflect real professional practice.

Professional working proficiency in English is strongly preferred. Akaris is an American startup, and much of the discussion with our U.S.-based founders and engineering team will be conducted in English. Candidates who are comfortable explaining environmental concepts and participating in technical and product discussions in English will be especially valuable.

Bahasa Indonesia fluency and strong knowledge of Indonesian environmental consulting practice are essential.

This position is focused on environmental consulting and environmental document workflows. General HSE, occupational safety, ESG, sustainability, or ISO experience alone is not sufficient unless accompanied by substantial hands-on environmental consulting and document preparation experience.

Preferred Qualifications

The following are helpful but not required:

  • Experience preparing multiple AMDAL, UKL-UPL, and/or RKL-RPL documents.
  • Experience with Persetujuan Teknis (Pertek) or other environmental permitting documents.
  • Experience with AMDALNET and OSS RBA.
  • Experience as an AMDAL team member or team leader.
  • AMDAL A/B training.
  • ATPA or KTPA certification.
  • Experience working across multiple industries or environmental projects.
  • Currently available for project-based work.

Engagement Details

This is an initial 3–4-week project.

We expect approximately:

10 hours per week

30–40 hours total

Work will include remote discussions, application testing, document and output review, environmental-domain questions, limited research, and follow-up feedback.

There is no fixed daily work schedule. Meetings will be scheduled by mutual agreement, and the contractor will generally control when and how independent review work is completed.

There may be opportunities for additional projects with Akaris after the initial engagement.

Compensation

This is a paid independent contractor engagement.

Our expected budget is approximately Rp150,000–Rp300,000 per hour, depending on experience, qualifications, English proficiency, and relevant environmental consulting expertise.

Higher rates may be considered for candidates with significant AMDAL experience, ATPA/KTPA certification, or specialized expertise.

If your expected rate is outside this range, you are still welcome to apply and indicate your expected rate.

Confidentiality

Candidates should not provide confidential, proprietary, or restricted documents belonging to current or former employers, clients, consulting firms, project owners, or other third parties.

We are primarily interested in your professional knowledge, experience, opinions, and understanding of environmental consulting workflows.

Help Us Improve the Industry

If this work sounds relevant to your experience—or if you have strong ideas about how environmental consulting workflows in Indonesia could be improved—we’d like to hear from you.

We are especially interested in professionals who have seen repetitive tasks, manual processes, inefficient workflows, unnecessary administrative work, or other problems firsthand and are willing to challenge our assumptions and help shape better software for environmental professionals in Indonesia.

Application Information

Please make sure your CV or LinkedIn profile clearly reflects your environmental consulting experience, environmental document experience, relevant certifications or AMDAL training, and English proficiency.
