Medical Interpreter (English - Vietnamese) - Remote Fulltime

About the Opportunity

Our client is partnering with a healthcare interpreting and language services provider to recruit English - Vietnamese Medical Video Remote Interpreters based in Vietnam.

In this role, you will help English-speaking healthcare professionals and Vietnamese-speaking patients communicate clearly during medical appointments and other healthcare interactions. Most interpreting sessions take place over video, with occasional telephone sessions.

Previous professional interpreting experience is NOT required. We welcome strong bilingual communicators who understand the interpreting role and are eager to develop a long-term career in medical interpreting.

Successful candidates will complete a structured Foundations Training Programme before starting live interpreting sessions.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide accurate, complete and professional interpretation between English and Vietnamese, primarily through video calls.
• Convey each speaker's meaning faithfully without adding, omitting or changing information.
• Facilitate communication between healthcare professionals and patients while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
• Follow interpreting ethics, professional standards, company procedures and applicable healthcare privacy requirements.
• Maintain strict patient confidentiality and handle sensitive medical information responsibly.
• Demonstrate cultural awareness, empathy and respect for patients from different backgrounds.
• Remain calm, focused and professional during complex, emotional or high-pressure conversations.
• Maintain a professional on-camera presence and use remote interpreting technology effectively.
• Participate in required training, coaching and quality improvement activities.

Required Qualifications

Language and Communication Skills

• Professional-level fluency in spoken English and Vietnamese, with excellent listening, comprehension and communication skills.
• Ability to understand and interpret information accurately in both languages.
• Clear understanding of an interpreter's responsibility to remain accurate, impartial and confidential.
• Strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and professional judgement.
• Ability to remain composed in challenging situations and communicate respectfully.
• Willingness to learn medical terminology and develop professional interpreting skills.
• Willingness to complete a Medical Interpreting Proficiency Assessment as part of recruitment.

Professional Requirements

• Reliable, responsible and committed to maintaining professional standards.
• Comfortable working on camera for the majority of each shift.
• Confident using video conferencing platforms and adapting to new technology.
• Able to receive constructive feedback and continuously improve performance.
• Comfortable interacting with healthcare professionals and patients in sensitive situations.
• Currently residing in Vietnam and available to work night shifts aligned with US Eastern Time.

Formal interpreting employment is not mandatory. Relevant informal interpreting experience may also demonstrate an understanding of the interpreter's role. However, candidates must demonstrate strong bilingual fluency and interpreting potential during the selection process.

Preferred Qualifications

The following qualifications are advantageous but not essential:

• Previous experience in medical interpreting, translation or language services.
• Experience in hospitals, clinics or other healthcare environments.
• Background in customer service, call centers or BPO environments.
• Familiarity with medical terminology in English and Vietnamese.
• Experience interpreting via video or telephone.
• Formal medical interpreter training, relevant qualifications or recognized medical interpreter certification.

Remote Work and Technical Requirements

As this role involves confidential medical information, candidates must meet specific home-office and technical requirements.

• A dedicated, private and quiet workspace with a door that can be locked.
• A work environment free from distractions and interruptions.
• A workspace where no other person can see the computer screen or access confidential information.
• Reliable, high-speed wired internet connection. Wi-Fi, mobile hotspots, satellite and DSL connections are not accepted.
• Ability to maintain a professional appearance and environment throughout video interpreting sessions.
• Ability to complete required background checks and drug screening.

Please note that this is a home-based position in Vietnam, not a work-from-anywhere role.

Working Hours and Employment

This is a full-time, permanent position requiring night-shift availability aligned with US Eastern Time.

The exact working schedule will be confirmed during the recruitment process.

Standard working hours are 8 hours per day, with a maximum of 48 hours per week, subject to applicable employment regulations in Vietnam.

Candidates should be comfortable with a consistent night-shift schedule and committed to reliable attendance.
