Help Shape the Future of Melbourne's Rail Network
Every day, Melbourne's rail network connects people to work, education, healthcare, family and recreation. Behind every train service is a team of people who use data, analysis and innovative thinking to help make the network safer, more reliable and better for passengers.
We're looking for a Rail Operations Modelling Officer to join our Rail Operations and Modelling team.
You don't need rail experience to be successful in this role. We're looking for someone who is curious, analytical, enjoys solving problems and is excited to learn. Whether you're a recent graduate, early in your career, or looking to apply your analytical skills in a new field, this could be the perfect opportunity to build a rewarding career in transport.
You'll work alongside experienced rail operations and modelling professionals who will help you develop specialist skills in railway planning, simulation and data analysis while contributing to projects that help shape Melbourne's future transport network.
About The Role
Max Term Contract of 12months
As a Rail Operations Modelling Officer, you'll support the development of rail operations models, analytical tools and insights that inform how Melbourne's rail network operates today and how it evolves into the future.
More Role Responsibilities Include
- Assist in the development and maintenance of rail operations models that support service planning and network improvement initiatives.
- Support the development and assessment of train timetables, helping balance customer needs, network capacity and operational requirements.
- Build and maintain rail network models using specialist simulation and modelling software.
- Collect, organise and validate data to ensure modelling outputs accurately represent network performance.
- Contribute to scenario testing and analysis to evaluate service changes, infrastructure upgrades and future network initiatives.
- Help develop tools and dashboards that support evidence-based decision making.
- Collaborate with teams across Metro, the Department of Transport and Planning, V/Line and other industry partners to develop solutions that improve Melbourne's rail network
We're less interested in whether you've worked in rail operations before and more interested in the qualities you'll bring to the team.
You might be a great fit if you are:
- Curious and Eager to Learn
- Analytical and Insightful
- A Problem Solver
- Collaborative
- An Effective Communicator
We're looking for potential, not a perfect match.
You may have:
- A degree or qualification in Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Analytics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Science, Transport Planning, Economics or a related discipline.
- Experience using Excel and an interest in data analysis, modelling, programming or problem solving.
- Exposure to tools such as SQL, Python, Power BI, Access or similar through work, study, research projects or personal interests.
- A genuine interest in transport, infrastructure, operations, data or analytics.
Rail industry experience is not required. We'll provide training and support to help you develop specialist rail modelling skills.
