Your Role in Supporting Our Members:
As a Risk Management Automation & AI Intern, you will support our Financial Crime, Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Fraud, and Security teams by identifying opportunities to improve processes and reduce manual effort through emerging technologies. Working alongside risk professionals and business stakeholders, you will analyze how work is currently performed and explore practical applications of AI, robotic process automation (RPA), intelligent agents, and workflow automation tools. You will contribute to proof-of-concept solutions and recommendations that enhance operational effectiveness while supporting regulatory and risk management standards. This role offers an opportunity to apply technology, data analysis, and innovative thinking to real-world risk management challenges within a regulated financial services environment.
This is a Full-time, 4-Month Internship starting in January 2027. Based at Vancity’s Head Office in Vancouver, you will report to the Chief Risk Officer. While this position provides a hybrid work arrangement, you will be expected to be on-site for events and business demands.
How You'll Make an Impact:
- Analyzing existing workflows across Financial Crime, AML, Fraud, and Security operations to understand current processes, operational requirements, and areas of manual effort
- Reviewing investigation and case management activities, including the handling of Unusual Transaction Reports (UTRs) and related risk information
- Identifying opportunities to apply AI, intelligent agents, RPA, and workflow automation to improve efficiency and streamline repetitive processes
- Partnering with business stakeholders to map processes, gather requirements, and document improvement opportunities
- Researching emerging technologies and automation tools relevant to financial crime prevention, fraud monitoring, and risk management activities
- Developing proof-of-concept solutions, prototypes, or recommendations that demonstrate potential efficiency and process improvements
- Analyzing data and process measures to help quantify operational improvements and support business cases
- Supporting testing, change management, and implementation activities associated with new processes and automated solutions
- Presenting findings, recommendations, and business cases to leaders and subject matter experts
- Contributing to initiatives that reduce manual effort and create additional capacity for higher-value risk management activities
What You’ll Bring to the Team:
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Business Analytics, Information Technology, Engineering, Commerce, or a related field
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate information and identify patterns, trends, and opportunities for improvement
- Strong interest in applying technology, AI, automation, and data analysis to real-world business challenges
- Ability to learn and understand complex business processes quickly and translate findings into practical recommendations
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present information clearly to different stakeholders
- Comfort working with data and using information to support analysis and decision-making
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with business stakeholders and cross-functional teams
Extra Skills That Set You Apart:
- Knowledge of AI, machine learning, generative AI, intelligent automation, or robotic process automation concepts
- Exposure to automation technologies such as Microsoft Power Automate, UiPath, Automation Anywhere, Microsoft Copilot Studio, or similar platforms
- Experience with data analysis tools such as Excel, Power BI, SQL, Python, or R
You’ll Thrive Here If You Are:
- Curious & Innovative – You enjoy exploring emerging technologies, asking thoughtful questions, and finding smarter ways to solve complex problems.
- Technology Savvy – You are comfortable learning new tools and applying technology to improve how work gets done.
- Critical Thinker – You evaluate processes and information carefully and develop practical, well-reasoned recommendations.
- Collaborative – You enjoy working with stakeholders and subject matter experts to understand challenges and develop solutions together.
- Results-Oriented – You take ownership of your work and focus on solutions that create meaningful and measurable improvements.
We value lived experience, so if you are interested in this role, we encourage you to apply even if you feel your skills don't perfectly align with those listed.
