Job Summary:

The Ruby on Rails Backend Developer will design, build and maintain the backend services and APIs that power Hyly.AI’s products for the multifamily industry. This includes building REST and GraphQL APIs, modeling data in PostgreSQL, running background processing at scale, and keeping production systems fast and reliable. We work AI-first: you’ll build/use AI coding agents, reusable skills and agent workflows every day to plan, write, test, review and debug code faster without lowering quality.

Must - Have Qualifications:

• 3-5 years of professional backend development, with at least 3 years in Ruby on Rails
• Strong experience building JSON APIs (REST; GraphQL a plus)
• Solid PostgreSQL skills: query design, indexing, EXPLAIN/ANALYZE
• Strong testing habits with RSpec or Minitest
• Hands-on, daily use of AI coding tools in a professional setting, and the judgment to review, test and correct AI-generated code
• Comfortable with Git, pull-request workflows and CI pipelines
• Comfortable working fully remote and communicating asynchronously

Job Responsibilities:

• Design, build and maintain REST and GraphQL APIs in Ruby on Rails
• Model data and write efficient PostgreSQL queries, indexes and safe migrations
• Find and fix performance problems: N+1 queries, slow endpoints, heavy jobs
• Build reliable background processing with Sidekiq, including retries, idempotency and monitoring
• Use AI coding agents (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) daily for development, testing, refactoring, debugging and code review, and verify their output carefully
• Create and improve reusable AI skills, prompts and agent workflows that speed up the team (e.g., RSpec generation, PR review checklists, migration safety checks, log triage)
• Write well-tested code (RSpec, request specs) and take part in code reviews
• Work with front-end, product and QA teams to define API contracts
• Monitor production health, investigate incidents and ship fixes
• Document APIs and technical decisions clearly for a distributed team

Preferred (Nice-to-Have) Qualifications:

• Experience creating reusable AI skills, prompt templates or agent workflows for engineering tasks (e.g., test generation, PR review, refactoring)
• Familiarity with MCP servers or connecting AI agents to dev tools (GitHub, databases, logs, ticketing)
• Experience using AI tools for debugging, log analysis and incident triage
• Experience with Redis caching and Sidekiq/Resque at scale
• Experience with observability tools (Datadog, New Relic, Sentry)
• Understanding of Docker, GitHub Actions and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP)
