Job Title: Senior Ceramic Thermal Shock Testing Specialist

Location: United Arab Emirates (Remote)

Employment Type: Full-Time

Work Arrangement: 100% Remote — Work From Home

Level: Senior

About the Role

The Senior Ceramic Thermal Shock Testing Specialist is responsible for providing technical expertise in the evaluation, analysis, and qualification of ceramic materials under rapid temperature-change conditions. The role focuses on reviewing thermal shock test protocols, analysing laboratory performance data, assessing material degradation, evaluating thermal cycling resistance, and supporting product qualification and quality improvement initiatives.

Working remotely with ceramic engineers, materials scientists, testing laboratories, manufacturers, and quality assurance teams, the specialist helps determine whether ceramic products meet defined thermal performance and reliability requirements. The position is focused on technical analysis, test documentation review, data interpretation, and virtual coordination. Physical specimen preparation, thermal cycling experiments, laboratory equipment operation, and material inspections must be performed by qualified local laboratory personnel.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review thermal shock testing procedures and qualification requirements for technical ceramics, advanced ceramics, refractories, and other ceramic products.
  • Evaluate test plans involving rapid heating, cooling, temperature cycling, and controlled thermal gradients.
  • Analyse laboratory data relating to thermal shock resistance, crack development, strength retention, and material degradation.
  • Review temperature exposure profiles, heating and cooling rates, dwell periods, and cycle counts against approved test protocols.
  • Assess documented changes in flexural strength, compressive strength, fracture toughness, and other mechanical properties following thermal cycling.
  • Evaluate the influence of thermal expansion coefficients, thermal conductivity, heat capacity, and elastic properties on ceramic thermal shock behaviour.
  • Review microscopy images, fracture surface records, and other available evidence of thermal cracking, spalling, delamination, and structural damage.
  • Analyse the effects of material composition, porosity, grain structure, microstructure, and manufacturing processes on thermal shock performance.
  • Compare thermal shock performance across ceramic grades, suppliers, production batches, and material formulations.
  • Review test reports for completeness, traceability, measurement accuracy, and consistency with applicable technical standards.
  • Assess the suitability of test methods and acceptance criteria for specific ceramic applications and operating environments.
  • Support the qualification of new ceramic formulations and product designs through technical evaluation of thermal shock test evidence.
  • Investigate documented test failures, unexpected material responses, and recurring performance deviations.
  • Conduct remote root-cause analysis using laboratory records, microscopy results, material specifications, and historical performance data.
  • Recommend improvements to testing protocols, material selection criteria, and quality control procedures.
  • Prepare technical assessment reports, test result summaries, material comparison studies, and qualification recommendations.
  • Maintain controlled records of test protocols, material specifications, laboratory results, deviations, and qualification decisions.
  • Review supplier documentation, certificates of analysis, technical data sheets, and material compliance evidence.
  • Coordinate remotely with testing laboratories to clarify test conditions, resolve reporting discrepancies, and obtain supporting technical information.
  • Support internal audits, supplier evaluations, and quality management reviews relating to ceramic thermal performance.
  • Contribute to the development of standard operating procedures, test review checklists, and technical guidance documents.
  • Monitor developments in ceramic engineering, thermal shock testing methodologies, materials science, and relevant industry standards.
  • Collaborate with engineering, procurement, research and development, and manufacturing quality teams to improve product reliability.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Ceramic Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Master's degree or PhD in Advanced Ceramics, Materials Science, Thermal Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • Significant experience in ceramic materials testing, thermal shock evaluation, materials qualification, or laboratory quality assurance.
  • Strong understanding of ceramic material properties, including thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, fracture toughness, porosity, and mechanical strength.
  • Knowledge of thermal shock mechanisms, including thermal stress development, crack propagation, spalling, and strength degradation.
  • Experience reviewing thermal cycling and thermal shock test data for technical ceramics or refractory materials.
  • Familiarity with testing methods and applicable ASTM, ISO, EN, or other recognised ceramic material standards.
  • Understanding of the relationship between ceramic microstructure, material composition, manufacturing processes, and thermal performance.
  • Experience reviewing mechanical testing results before and after thermal exposure.
  • Familiarity with microscopy, fracture analysis, and documented material characterisation techniques.
  • Ability to evaluate test methodology, measurement uncertainty, repeatability, and acceptance criteria.
  • Experience preparing technical reports, qualification assessments, and material performance comparisons.
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality management systems, test traceability, and nonconformance management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, statistical analysis tools, and technical reporting applications.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex experimental datasets.
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to coordinate with laboratories, materials engineers, suppliers, and manufacturing teams.
  • Relevant professional engineering registration or certification is an advantage, where applicable.
What We Offer
  • A 100% remote working arrangement based in the United Arab Emirates.
  • Opportunities to contribute to advanced ceramic materials testing and product reliability initiatives.
  • Collaboration with materials engineers, ceramic specialists, research teams, and accredited testing laboratories.
  • Opportunities for professional development in thermal analysis, ceramic engineering, and materials qualification.
  • A technically focused role involving laboratory data analysis, material assessment, and continuous improvement.
How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit an updated CV highlighting their experience in ceramic materials, thermal shock testing, materials engineering, laboratory testing, or product qualification.
