About the RoleThe Senior Bitumen Performance Testing Specialist provides technical expertise in the evaluation, analysis, and qualification of bitumen and asphalt binder materials used in road construction, pavement engineering, and infrastructure projects. The role focuses on reviewing laboratory test results, assessing binder performance characteristics, evaluating material compliance, and analysing how temperature, ageing, loading, and environmental conditions influence bitumen behaviour.
Working remotely with pavement engineers, materials laboratories, road construction contractors, suppliers, and quality assurance teams, the specialist supports material selection, performance assessment, technical reporting, and continuous improvement. This is a fully remote technical role centred on test data analysis, specification review, and virtual coordination. Physical sampling, laboratory testing, equipment operation, and site inspections must be conducted by qualified local personnel.
Key Responsibilities- Review bitumen and asphalt binder testing programmes to ensure alignment with project specifications and applicable technical standards.
- Analyse laboratory test results relating to penetration, softening point, ductility, viscosity, flash point, and other conventional binder properties.
- Evaluate performance grading data and assess binder suitability for specified climatic and traffic conditions.
- Review results from Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR), Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR), and other performance-based testing methods.
- Assess binder stiffness, elastic recovery, fatigue resistance, rutting resistance, and low-temperature cracking susceptibility.
- Analyse the effects of short-term and long-term ageing on bitumen performance using documented test results.
- Review Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO) and Pressure Aging Vessel (PAV) test reports and associated performance data.
- Evaluate bitumen modification performance, including polymer-modified binders, crumb rubber-modified binders, and other specialised formulations.
- Compare binder properties across suppliers, production batches, grades, and material formulations.
- Review laboratory quality control records, test repeatability, measurement uncertainty, and result consistency.
- Assess compliance with relevant ASTM, AASHTO, EN, ISO, and project-specific testing requirements.
- Analyse documented binder compatibility with aggregates, additives, rejuvenators, and asphalt mixture designs.
- Support the technical evaluation of bitumen materials for different pavement applications and environmental exposure conditions.
- Investigate documented test deviations, inconsistent material properties, and potential performance concerns.
- Conduct remote root-cause analysis of material nonconformities using laboratory reports, supplier records, and historical performance data.
- Prepare technical assessment reports, material qualification summaries, performance comparison studies, and recommendations.
- Review supplier technical data sheets, certificates of analysis, product specifications, and compliance documentation.
- Support the development and maintenance of bitumen testing procedures, acceptance criteria, and technical review checklists.
- Collaborate remotely with testing laboratories, pavement engineers, procurement teams, and construction quality professionals.
- Monitor material performance trends and identify opportunities to improve binder selection and pavement durability.
- Support internal audits, supplier assessments, and quality management reviews relating to bitumen materials.
- Maintain accurate records of test results, material approvals, technical deviations, and corrective action recommendations.
- Monitor developments in bitumen technology, asphalt binder modification, pavement materials research, and relevant industry standards.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Highway Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Master's degree in Pavement Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Materials Science, or Highway Materials is preferred.
- Significant experience in bitumen testing, asphalt materials engineering, pavement quality assurance, or materials laboratory evaluation.
- Strong understanding of bitumen properties, binder classifications, and performance requirements for road construction.
- Experience reviewing conventional bitumen test results, including penetration, softening point, ductility, viscosity, and density.
- Knowledge of Superpave performance grading principles and performance-based binder evaluation.
- Familiarity with DSR, BBR, RTFO, PAV, and other recognised bitumen testing methodologies.
- Understanding of binder ageing, temperature susceptibility, rutting, fatigue cracking, and low-temperature cracking mechanisms.
- Experience evaluating polymer-modified bitumen, rubber-modified binders, and other specialised asphalt binder formulations.
- Knowledge of ASTM, AASHTO, EN, and other applicable testing and material specification standards.
- Ability to interpret laboratory datasets and identify inconsistencies, material deviations, and performance trends.
- Experience reviewing laboratory quality control documentation, test procedures, and material qualification reports.
- Familiarity with asphalt mixture design, aggregate-binder interaction, and pavement performance requirements.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, technical reporting applications, and statistical analysis tools.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical documentation skills.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to coordinate with laboratories, suppliers, engineers, and project stakeholders.
- Relevant professional engineering registration or certification is an advantage, where applicable.
- Ability to manage multiple technical reviews and work independently in a fully remote environment.
- A 100% remote working arrangement based in the United Arab Emirates.
- Opportunities to contribute to road infrastructure, pavement materials, and asphalt performance initiatives.
- Collaboration with civil engineers, materials specialists, testing laboratories, and construction quality teams.
- Opportunities for professional development in pavement engineering, bitumen technology, and materials testing standards.
- A technically focused role involving performance analysis, material qualification, and quality improvement.
Interested candidates should submit an updated CV highlighting their experience in bitumen testing, asphalt materials, pavement engineering, materials laboratory analysis, or construction quality assurance.
