About the Role

The Senior Lubricant Tribology Testing Specialist provides technical expertise in evaluating lubricant performance, friction characteristics, wear behaviour, and component protection under different operating conditions. The role focuses on remote technical review of tribology test results, interpretation of laboratory data, assessment of lubricant formulations, and quality assurance of testing methodologies. The specialist works with lubricant manufacturers, testing laboratories, engineering teams, and industrial clients to support product development, performance validation, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

• Review and evaluate lubricant tribology test results, including friction coefficients, wear measurements, load capacity, and surface interaction data.
• Assess lubricant performance under different temperature, pressure, speed, and load conditions.
• Interpret results from recognized tribological testing methods, including pin-on-disc, four-ball, reciprocating, and other relevant wear and friction tests.
• Review laboratory procedures and test reports for technical accuracy, consistency, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards.
• Analyze lubricant properties and formulation characteristics that influence friction reduction, wear protection, oxidation stability, and component durability.
• Evaluate test data relating to boundary, mixed, and hydrodynamic lubrication regimes.
• Review wear scar measurements, surface roughness data, friction curves, and other performance indicators.
• Assess the influence of base oils, viscosity modifiers, anti-wear additives, extreme-pressure additives, and friction modifiers on lubricant performance.
• Identify abnormal test results, inconsistencies, and potential sources of measurement variation.
• Provide technical recommendations for improving testing protocols, data reliability, and lubricant performance evaluation.
• Support comparative assessments of lubricant formulations for automotive, industrial, marine, and heavy-equipment applications.
• Review laboratory quality-control documentation, equipment calibration records, and measurement uncertainty assessments.
• Coordinate remotely with laboratory personnel to investigate discrepancies and clarify testing outcomes.
• Prepare technical reports, test summaries, performance comparisons, and evidence-based recommendations.
• Maintain traceable records of test results, technical reviews, deviations, and corrective action recommendations.
• Support lubricant research and development teams with data interpretation and performance benchmarking.
• Contribute to internal audits and quality improvement initiatives involving tribology testing and lubricant evaluation.
• Monitor developments in tribology research, lubricant testing standards, and relevant industry practices.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Tribology, Chemistry, or a related discipline.
• Significant experience in lubricant testing, tribology analysis, lubrication engineering, materials evaluation, or industrial product development.
• Strong understanding of friction, wear, lubrication mechanisms, surface interactions, and contact mechanics.
• Familiarity with ASTM, ISO, and other recognized standards relevant to lubricant and tribological testing.
• Practical knowledge of test methodologies such as ASTM D4172, ASTM D2783, ASTM D5183, and applicable friction and wear evaluation procedures.
• Experience interpreting pin-on-disc, four-ball, reciprocating, and related tribology test data.
• Understanding of lubricant formulation, viscosity characteristics, base oil selection, and additive chemistry.
• Ability to assess wear patterns, friction trends, surface damage, and lubricant performance indicators.
• Experience reviewing laboratory reports, quality-control documentation, and technical specifications.
• Familiarity with laboratory quality management principles, including ISO/IEC 17025.
• Strong analytical, numerical, and technical report-writing skills.
• Proficiency in spreadsheet applications, data analysis tools, and technical reporting systems.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams remotely.
