About the RoleThe Senior Microbial Resistance Surveillance Specialist supports the monitoring, analysis, and interpretation of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) data to help healthcare organisations, laboratories, and public health teams understand resistance patterns and strengthen surveillance programmes. The role focuses on reviewing microbiology datasets, analysing antimicrobial susceptibility trends, assessing surveillance quality, identifying emerging resistance signals, and preparing evidence-based reports for relevant stakeholders.
Working remotely with microbiologists, infectious disease specialists, epidemiologists, laboratory quality teams, and public health professionals, the specialist helps improve data consistency, reporting standards, and the reliability of resistance surveillance. The position is analytical and advisory in nature. Physical specimen collection, laboratory testing, clinical diagnosis, patient treatment decisions, and official public health notifications remain the responsibility of appropriately qualified and authorised local professionals.
- Coordinate remote review and analysis of antimicrobial resistance surveillance datasets from participating laboratories and healthcare facilities.
- Monitor trends in antimicrobial susceptibility results across bacterial and other clinically relevant microbial isolates.
- Review microbiology data for completeness, consistency, accuracy, and suitability for surveillance reporting.
- Analyse resistance patterns involving priority pathogens and clinically significant antimicrobial agents.
- Evaluate trends in multidrug-resistant organisms and other emerging resistance profiles using established surveillance definitions.
- Review laboratory reports relating to organism identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and resistance classification.
- Assess the consistency of antimicrobial susceptibility data with applicable laboratory standards, interpretive criteria, and approved reporting methodologies.
- Identify unusual resistance patterns, potential data anomalies, and significant changes requiring review by qualified microbiology or public health professionals.
- Prepare periodic resistance surveillance summaries, dashboards, trend reports, and analytical presentations.
- Support the development and maintenance of AMR surveillance indicators, data dictionaries, reporting templates, and quality standards.
- Review historical surveillance data to identify geographic, institutional, departmental, or temporal patterns in antimicrobial resistance.
- Analyse data relating to healthcare-associated resistant organisms, including relevant transmission and infection prevention indicators where available.
- Support the evaluation of antimicrobial stewardship programme indicators through analysis of antimicrobial use and resistance trends.
- Collaborate remotely with microbiology laboratories to resolve data discrepancies and improve the consistency of submitted surveillance records.
- Review laboratory data submission processes and recommend improvements to data capture, validation, and reporting workflows.
- Assist with the development of standard operating procedures for surveillance data management, quality review, and analytical reporting.
- Support the preparation of technical documentation for internal audits, external assessments, accreditation activities, and surveillance programme reviews.
- Contribute to research summaries, epidemiological assessments, and evidence reviews relating to antimicrobial resistance.
- Provide analytical support for the interpretation of resistance surveillance findings during multidisciplinary meetings.
- Monitor relevant scientific publications, surveillance methodologies, and developments in antimicrobial resistance monitoring.
- Maintain accurate records of analytical decisions, data limitations, review outcomes, and recommendations.
- Ensure confidential handling of laboratory, healthcare, and public health information in accordance with applicable data protection requirements.
- Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science, Epidemiology, Public Health, Infectious Disease, or a related discipline.
- Master's degree in Microbiology, Clinical Microbiology, Epidemiology, Public Health, Infectious Disease, or a related field is preferred.
- Significant experience in antimicrobial resistance surveillance, clinical microbiology data analysis, laboratory quality, epidemiology, or public health monitoring.
- Strong understanding of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, resistance phenotypes, and clinically significant resistant organisms.
- Knowledge of antimicrobial susceptibility testing principles, including relevant interpretive standards and laboratory reporting practices.
- Familiarity with surveillance of multidrug-resistant organisms and priority bacterial pathogens.
- Experience reviewing microbiology laboratory datasets and identifying inconsistencies, missing information, and unusual results.
- Understanding of healthcare-associated infections, infection prevention principles, and antimicrobial stewardship.
- Ability to interpret resistance trends without making unsupported clinical conclusions from surveillance data alone.
- Experience preparing epidemiological summaries, statistical reports, analytical dashboards, or technical surveillance documentation.
- Proficiency in spreadsheet applications, data visualisation tools, and statistical analysis software.
- Familiarity with laboratory information management systems, electronic health records, or microbiology reporting platforms is an advantage.
- Knowledge of relevant public health surveillance frameworks and recognised antimicrobial resistance monitoring methodologies.
- Strong analytical, numerical, and problem-solving skills, with careful attention to data integrity.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical findings to multidisciplinary audiences.
- Ability to manage confidential information and work independently in a fully remote environment.
- Relevant professional registration or laboratory credentials, where required for the applicable responsibilities, are desirable.
- A fully remote working arrangement based in the United Arab Emirates.
- The opportunity to contribute to antimicrobial resistance monitoring and public health surveillance initiatives.
- A collaborative environment involving laboratory, epidemiology, healthcare quality, and public health professionals.
- Opportunities for continued professional development in microbiology, surveillance analytics, and antimicrobial resistance research.
- A role focused on technical analysis, evidence review, and continuous improvement.
Interested candidates should submit an updated CV highlighting relevant experience in antimicrobial resistance surveillance, microbiology, laboratory data analysis, epidemiology, or public health reporting.
